In researching the recording history of this tune, I find that Wilson Picket recorded it in 1965 and Duane Allman, indeed, was the guitar player. Not sure if Picket recorded it again in 1969, of if it was just re-leased (as part of an album?). At any rate, this song has been recorded numerous times, which hopefully earned the author (Billy Roberts) some significant royalties. Here's a link to the original, which dates back to the early 60's > kzitem.info/news/bejne/sbCfz4Kwf4mLopw

Jimi was always very self-critical of his singing voice. When you hear guys like Wilson singing, you know the kind of vocal geniuses he was comparing himself too. Jimi's charm won out, but he wasn't in the same universe singing wise as this guy.

Yeah Jimi had a great voice for his own songs....you don’t realize how awesome of a vocalist Jimi was until you hear other people try to do his songs: I cringe when I hear even great singers try to cover his songs. Jimi’s soul and charm really allowed him to make the most of his vocal capabilities (which while great, are not in the same league as Wilson Pickett or Marvin Gaye).

+Martin sølvsten actually, I believe the original "Hey Joe" was written by Billy Roberts in 1962. I was living in England in 1966 when I heard Tim Rose's version of the song which was later recorded by Jimi Hendrix. The "Leaves" version is a cover from the author, Billy Roberts.
@wkstratton5221
8 жыл бұрын
True, Billy Roberts wrote "Hey Joe" in 1962. But he did not record it in the 1960s. The Byrds included it in their concerts around L.A. for several years before they actually recorded it. The Leaves heard the Byrds perform it and decided to record it (1966). The Leaves released three versions of the song. The first, released as "Hey Joe, Where You Gonna Go?", came out on Mira Records in 1965. That is the first version of "Hey Joe" released on record. Everything that followed is a cover of the Leaves' original release. A version of "Hey Joe" purported to be by Billy Roberts shows up on KZitem, but it is a recording from much later and I'm not sure it's actually Billy Roberts.

The guitar is NOT Duane - he was already in Jacksonville, Florida perfecting the Allman Brother sound. This album was recorded in 1969; the last time Duane played for Wilson was in 1968 on the Hey JUDE album, not Hey Joe. And the guitar is NOT Jimi Hendrix. The picture above is a charity event, not a recording studio. Jimi, like Duane, like Leon Russell was making a living playing house bands waiting to be discovered. Jimi was discovered shortly after this picture, played Fillmore for Bill Graham and off to England. His days playing house bands very short - no knowledge that he ever recorded in a studio for Wilson.

"The Wicked Mr. Pickett and Jimi Hendrix On Stage Together in 1966 "Jimi Hendrix and Wilson Pickett, Prelude Club, Atlantic Records release party, Harlem, New York, May 5, 1966. Photographed by Michael Randolph." "Oh, and that guitar player behind him? That’s none other than Jimi Hendrix in a tux, playing on a pre-1965 Fender Jazzmaster at an Atlantic Records party in 1966. (Atlantic distributed Stax-Volt records nationwide.) A year later, wielding a Strat, Jimi would be performing at the Monterey Pop Festival and the rest is history."

That doesn't make it any more a Jimi song than "All Along the Watchtower," which is a Bob Dylan song despite Hendrix's great cover of it. "Hey Joe" was written by Billy Roberts and/or Dino Valenti and that's whose song it is. And many bands recorded it before Jimi. Check out the version by the Music Machine from '66 which is quite similar to the Hendrix.
@wcorowitz

Jimi took this song, just like he did Dylan's. After Jimi covered this song, more soul artists started to cover it. Lee Moses also has a great version. Both Lee and Wilson Pickett have Jimi connections. It's only right that Wilson cover this song, since Jimi used to cover some of his songs like Land of a 1,000 Dances when he was just starting out.

Also, I have more info further down in the thread. Look for more by me. This is my favorite rendition of this song and I have tried to find accurate & historical info about it.

Indeed, you are right. Duane played for Wilson on Hey Jude. If you ever see that picture with Wilson laughing hysterically with Duane to his left, that was the session where they recorded Hey Jude, recorded at Muscle Shoals, Fame Studios. Fame Studios was special for Duane and Wilson both - they did some of their best work there. If you want more insight into this period, I recommend the documentary Muscle Shoals. On Netflix, and Gregg is interviewed in it as well.
