You can see Evert employing a 'wood racket' tactic here that she would end up ditching against Martina soon after this match. Evert frequently drills her first (backhand) pass hard directly at the incoming volleyer, trying to induce an error off that volley or at least get a defensive volley back. She used this often against King and Goolagong because her flat backhand was one of the hardest strokes in the game, and the sweetspot in her opponent's wood racket was so small that, when robbed of time and angle, it was very hard to keep the wrist strong enough not to mishit the volley. it became an increasingly risky play against Martina unless Evert was well inside the baseline, because martina's arm and wrist were stronger than anyone elses' and even with the medium sized graphite racket face, the sweet spot has grown exponentially.

@@martinpascoe7678 That physical strength in the arm and wrist is a great asset when outstretched, or when dealing with shots directly into the body or when digging out half volleys in the grass. Just keeping that racket face steady against a hard struck pass, means you can make a defensive volley into something more potent, if you can control that wrist and muscle that ball. Margaret Court and Martina got themselves out of a lot of trouble up at net because they were so physically strong. @martinpascoe7678

1982 a strange year for both players in many ways. Martina had won the Australian Open in December 1981, then won the French in 1982, with Chris playing a very flat match against Andrea Jaeger in the semis. Wimbledon was Martina's third slam win in a row. After this, the roles seemed to be reversed. Martina had a bizarre loss to Pam Shriver at the US Open, claiming afterwards that she'd contracted toxoplasmosis from a friend's cat. Commentators at the time felt it was more a case of the notorious nerves returning that Martina had been famous for in her earlier career. Chris sailed on to win her sixth US open. At the Australian Open in December 1982, Chris again won, defeating Martina in the final. Martina playing a very odd match, staying back a lot of the time. Chris also went on to win the 1983 French Open, meaning that she had her own streak of three slams in a row.

claiming....a NYC Doctor who was treating her for it gave a press conference confirming the diagnosis after the match- I believe his name was Wadler, it plagued her the rest of the year- she could start strong, but her energy would wane the longer the match went... and Chris had an easier time at the 83 French (like Martina had at 82 French) because of Martina's bizarre upset by Kathy Horvath, Martina's ONLY loss that year, 86-1... story behind Martina's French loss- coach- Renee Richards hadn't arrived in Paris until this match. Martina blitzed her 1st 3 opponents, with serve/volley but Renee told her to hang back and rally with Horvath. Renee's logic was, it would be likely to face Chris in the final, and Horvath would provide a good back court challenge for prep work. After Martina lost the first set- she abandoned the tactic and served and volleyed thru the 2nd- clobbering Horvath, then- something strange happened. Martina and Nancy (Martina's girlfriend/trainer/pro basketball star Lieberman) had been fighting/the relationship was on the rocks, but also Renee and Nancy were fighting- that's why Renee was late arriving.... At the start of the 3rd, Nancy went to the bathroom and instead of going back to her seat next to Renee, she took a seat near the court to cheer Martina on. Martina saw this and lost her focus, thinking they had another fight and after the match she'd be pulled into yet another drama. Kathy seized on this and Martina was out- her only loss of the year.

@@aagold76 Whatever the realities, there was a lot of scepticism about it all. Pam Shriver, her doubles partner, was somewhat upset by Martina saying she was ill and said to the press: "I think she has a little more respect for me deep down," "I wish we could sit down and look at a tape of it. She would say, 'See, I didn't move the way I should on that.' I would say, 'But I hit it a lot harder than I usually do and look at the placement.' "We've talked about it a little but it's always around the illness. I'd rather not talk about it at all. I don't want to tarnish it in any way." Shriver, (who'd already beaten Martina at the US Open once before) said that her 82 win was the best match she'd ever played. Martina subsequently got into a bit of a punch up with a photographer after that 82 US Open loss who had spotted her hiding in the stands crying. She ran up to him and pulled the film from his camera. It led to a long legal battle that wasn't resolved until 1986.

Some unusual tactics here from Martina - staying back a lot on her serve and standing way wide to serve in the deuce court. They were tactics that Renée Richards had put together for Martina. Staying back a lot on serve so Chris couldn't hurt Martiina with her returns. Standing so wide to serve in the deuce court so she get could a better angle going out wide to Chris's weaker forehand. When Martina switched coaches a year or so later to Mike Estep, he encouraged her instead to attack on everything.

Yes, Martina was head and shoulders better than Chris in 1982 on grass every year that they played , occasionally Martina would be off and Chris came close to winning - winning only 80 W Sf and Australian in 82. Martina was pooped by the Australian 82 winning 3 of the last 5 grand slam finals losing 7-6 in third to Tracy in 81 open and 6-3 in Australian 82 to Chris. Winning 81 Australian 82 French and Wimbledon. All of her hard work was really to shine winning 3/4 slams in 83 and again in 84. Then 2 in 85, appearing in all 4 slam finals, even in 85 when Evert joined Martina as far as improving her game , Martina was year end number one , number one in 86 and as far as I’m concerned number one in 87 although technically Graf was number one in 87. I’d rather have Martina’s year winning W and open than Grafs year winning in Xenia Ohio lol ( just joking Steffi ).

I don't know about 1982, but sometime in '83 Chrissie started play testing with a Wilson graphite racket that might have been the Wilson Sting. She was interviewed by the Miami News either before or after Wimbledon '83 and revealed she had used the graphite racket in an exhibition tournament and had lost to both Andrea Jaeger and Sylvia Hanika. She said the racket was too "wild" and possibly delayed her using a graphite frame until the time she was introduced to the phenomenal Wilson Pro Staff. I still wish there was some timeline of all the rackets both Chrissie and Martina used during their careers. 😎
