Winchcombe, on the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Steam Heritage Railway is the subject of this film. It is visited by many thousands of visitors most with cameras, so trying to find a unique angle and edit it to appear different is quite difficult. You could just film the main features and narrate their history, throw in a few train movements and that would be an interesting film to watch, but would it be different? By adding a little mood music I have attempted to blend the old and the new.
If you were to suggest that most of our abandoned railways were built in the Victorian era in the mid 1800’s and closed in the mid 1960’s by Dr Beeching, you would be correct about 90% of the time. This one was an exception though as it was built just after the turn of the 20th century in around 1905. GWR were looking for a route north to rival the Midland Railway line. Unfortunately after the amalgamation of the railway companies it was demoted to a bypass loop as the Midland way was a better alternative.
Hard to imagine that this site was cleared and what you see today has been entirely rebuilt from scratch.
