With Long Beard XR, I found that If I kept aiming just a hair lower when I shot farther, it'd kept my patterns right where I wanted them, right on that neck. At 20, I had to aim for the base. That put me dead on every time. Long Beard XR is just such a reliable load. Once you figure out your particular gun's patten, you can count on that all day from Winchester. They really have their quality control down pat.

Wow!! Man i just bought 2 boxes of 3&1/2" #5's. I'm gonna be honest. If i was in a field i would take that 60-70 yrd shot lol. Great video man. Clear and to the point. No stupid music or trying to sell anything. Good honest review I'm glad i bought some xr's. I have every brand you can think of I've accumulated throughout the years. But never tried the xr's. You can bet I'm gonna. I've always loved Winchester shotgun rnds. They hit hard. Good luck!!

Winchester Longbeard XR #6 with the corresponding Carlson Longbeard Turkey choke is an effective combination. If time, money and effort are factors, new hunters may want to try this combo first with their gun to verify the pattern. It’s likely to yield good results.

I think you did a great job on the video. I looked in the comments below and discovered you are from West Virginia, I'm not too far from you in Ohio. How are you at calling turkeys in? Maybe an idea for tour next video. If you don't mind sometime we could meet, you could give me calling tips and I could give you some video tips if you plan to film your hunts. I subscribed to your channel. Good luck this turkey season.

Thank you very much for the feedback! I’m decent, I wouldn’t consider myself a professional by any means, but I’ve killed quite a few long beards in time. If in your previous videos you’ve called those turkeys in I’d say your pretty good at it! Big thing is if your somewhere new is trying to roost them the night before so you can set up on them first thing in the morning when they come off the roost and you would be able to get sweet footage of them possible gobbling in the tree tops! Maybe, after all this covid-19 goes away we could meet for sure! Thank you! I also have subscribed to you a while go! Thank you hopefully I will be able to get a bird or two this year! Thanks again!

Awesome video. I want a semi auto been looking hard but can't find any. I've always been impressed with my 870. Lucked up and got one at 70 yards last season with the 3.5 tss. But I normally shoot 3.5 longbeards xr.

Yeah, if you're looking for a remington semi right now your best bet would be online or local pawn shop. I haven't seen any on the shelves since they sold out, but they are going to start reproduction soon starting with the 870 again. I've been wanting to try out the TSS, but its a little rich for my blood lol. Good luck this season!

winchester testing shows that #6 shot retains the 2 ft lbs of energy needed to penetrate a turkeys head/neck vertebra at 35 yards, #5 has sufficient energy out to 45 yards.

Strait forward good video great patterns. I shoot the XR and shoot both 5’s and 6’s. I usually shoot 6’s in the past using other shells but they were subpar compared to the XR both XR 5 &6’s seem to produce nice patterns.

It seems to 3 inch shells do more damage than the 3 1/2. I’m using a Remington 870 with the Carlson long beard choke and I missed a giant opening day I’m not sure what happened I patterned it at 25 and 30 yards and had a really good group but I’m thinking of switching down with a 3 inch
@CountryRoadsWhitetail
2 жыл бұрын
It seems that a lot of the time the 3 inch mags pattern better than the 3.5s, but there are some advantages and disadvantages to both, but if the bird is 45 yards and in you should be good no matter what shell you decide to go with as long as the choke you have is quality. Oh man! I’m sorry to hear that! When they are really close it’s almost like shooting a rifle at those distances! Thank you for watching and your comment!

hardly anyone makes a video of turkey kill energy at the longer ranges. Why? What energy do you need to kill a turkey at the longer ranges? How far can you shoot with enough energy to kill a turkey ethically. It's very clear that this gun, choke and XR ammo can go the distance to 70 yards easy. But does it have enough energy to kill the turkey at that distance? What is the maximum energy wise that the load can produce at those ranges. Does it have enough energy to kill a turkey at 100 yards lets say if you could make that shot? This is what you need to know to make ethical shots at longer ranges. A 70 yard shot is not an unethical shot if you have the conditions, know how to aim and know what your gun, choke and load can do at that range. It may be unethical for you but not for someone else. Just because you can't make that shot doesn't mean it's unethical for everyone. 50 yards used to be called an unethical shot at one time. At the longer ranges chokes are critical to pick the right one for your gun. I have XR chokes for all my shotguns for turkeys. They work great in all of them. Remmington 870, 1187, 12ga., 20ga., Tristar 12ga. and 20ga. I saw a first time turkey hunter using my Remmington 1187 premier 12ga with XR choke, 3", #6 loads kill a turkey at 60 yards with one shot. I told him where to aim at the turkey and to keep his head down on the sights and he did just that. With more experience 70 yards will not be out of the question. To make a shot like that you must know what your gun setup can do at any range, have the right situation in the woods or field meaning the space to shoot without obstructions, the right weather conditions, consider the wind if any. Anybody can go in the woods and shoot a turkey at 20 yards on private land and be in and out in an hour. I like more a challenge than that. With my gun and setup I aim right at the top of the turkeys scalp at 60 yards dead center in the open hardwoods with almost no wind under the canopy in a low bottom area conditions. It was completely an ethical shot. I would have no problem ethically shooting that same shot and conditions at 70 yards. Beyond 70 yards you would need to shoot at least 2-3 shots for a faster kill. Out in an open field you must consider other things. I have seen hunters shoot 2 and 3 shots at turkeys at 20 yards because they miss or wound the bird. So 2-3 shots at 80 yards is not unethical. beyond that is where I stop. Not much energy after that unless you have a 3 1/2" chamber. A 100 yard shot is not out of the question than if you have the right conditions and the right situation. Long shots beyond 50 yards are very rare in the woods. Early spring, fields and open floor hardwoods are where the long shots come into play on birds that don't want to come in closer for whatever reason. Enjoy the hunt !
