Back in 2002 I installed many of the Heating-Air Conditioning systems for Dan Ryan Homes in the housing development around the Earthworks. Back then it was overgrown. I’m happy they’re preserving what’s left of it. Such a shame the Civil War Trust couldn’t have bought the property before Dan Ryan Homes built all those homes around the site. All that ground is sacred and should be saved.

We completely agree! It is wonderful to see what the SVBF team continues to do for both preservation and interpretation!

It is not well known that not everything or everyone pertaining to the fort was necessarily inside the fort itself. For instance, some of the captured prisoners were kept for a time in an area adjacent to the fort that now has houses on it. I used to metal detect there in the 1980s.

Yeah it seems like for a star fort to serve it's intended purpose stone walls of at least 10 ft. are required. With earthworks I'd go with trenches, ditches and abbatis.

How effective was the spiking of the 3 inch rifles, I was under (perhaps the mistaken impression) that this model of artillery was resistant to being spiked due to its construction
