I think some of the commentors are missing a point. With Internet access, Defender with default settings blocked all but two attacks and one of those was, as the author admitted, a fairly new attack. This test isn't realistic (by intent). It's a scenario almost no one will ever run into. It's a coverage test to see which specific attacks Defender still doesn't know about, and it did pretty well. If you were expecting 100% coverage, then you're expectations are a bit out of whack with reality. The reality is that most people will run into this kind of attack from a SINGLE source rarely. The question is more 'which one will get through when it happens?' and the reality is that most of them will get blocked. The real takeaway from this video was that Defender got much worse when Internet access was turned off. As he notes, the malware could function without Internet access, but Defender couldn't - which is a liability (although it still managed to block over half of the attacks). I suspect the problem is just how much data would have to be kept local - although given that almost all computers have at least a half a terabyte of storage, I find that argument a little less compelling. We still have a lot of 1990s 'my computer has so little RAM/CPU/HD/whatever' mindset (looking at you Linux fans) that lead to excessive optimisation or remote caching. No system is impervious - no system of defense is perfect. That's not even the goal (the last 1% is 1000x more difficult and expensive than the first 99%). The goal is to keep as many systems safe as is reasonable possible. In normal use, this video proves that Defender works. If you ARE the kind of person who goes looking for malware to run on your system (or like to frequent dangerous sites), well, no - Defender is a failure, but I suspect everything else will be as well.

To all those that might be skeptical about what ransomware is out there, if there is one thing you should understand: whether you're using kaspersky, bit defender, malwarebytes, avast, avg even the built in windows defender, who ever is sitting down using the computer is in control, no antivirus or anti malware product is going to protect you 100 percent of the time, when surfing the web, with the amount of infections being created every month, its not that easy for software security companies to stay on top of everything, the number one defense is going to be the user first, before any piece of software.

According to the CDC, from 1 Oct 2019 through 25 Jan 2020 in the US : - 19,000,000 - 26,000,000 flu illnesses - 8,600,000 - 12,000,000 flu medical visits - 180,000 - 310,000 flu hospitalizations - 10,000 - 25,000 FLU DEATHS www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/preliminary-in-season-estimates.htm Meanwhile the western mainstream media are too busy vilifying China so much so that they conveniently left out the coverage on this flu pandemic in the US & thus no one pays any attention to this. And where tf were you during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic? "In the spring of 2009, a novel influenza A (H1N1) virus emerged. It was detected first in the United States and spread quickly across the United States and the world... ...From April 12, 2009 to April 10, 2010, CDC estimated there were 60.8 million cases (range: 43.3-89.3 million), 274,304 hospitalizations (range: 195,086-402,719), and 12,469 deaths (range: 8868-18,306) in the United States (ALONE) due to the (H1N1)pdm09 virus. .. ...CDC estimated that 151,700 - 575,400 people worldwide died from (H1N1)pdm09 virus infection during the first year the virus circulated. Globally, 80 percent of (H1N1)pdm09 virus-related deaths were estimated to have occurred in people younger than 65 years of age." www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/2009-h1n1-pandemic.html Btw, do you know the number of people infected by the H1N1 virus during the 2009 pandemic? 1 in 5 of the world's population! Latest update (worldwide) on coronavirus: 563 deaths, 24702 infected & 1153 recovered (so far). This number seems insignificant compared to the damage the US inflicted on the US & rest of the world population! SMH! When it comes to virus production & dissemination, the US is second to none, simply hardcore. Just like no one can beat the US in political, military & commercial espionage while at the same time it is able to blame others (without evidence) for the very crime it is committing on the whole world. That's because the US reigns supreme in spreading propaganda, false info & fake news while at the same time it is able to cover up its numerous crimes, thanks to the almighty biased western mainstream media!

If the purpose of this video was to demonstrate that WD free features are not suited to the enterprise environment, then it is a pretty good demonstration. Of course, this is a well known fact (without any demonstration) because WD protection highly depends on the cloud backend, e.g. Cloud delivered protection, Block at First Sight, SmartScreen, and of course these features require an internet connection. There is one common feature of you "bash WD" videos: you fail to alert users to, or help them understand Windows Defender features. Please be cautious about the comments under your videos. Many people do not understand your videos so they need a little help from your side.:)(y)

I see the test just freaked out a lot of people. people, don't forget, the test ran a ton of malware manually! do you do the same stuff? then you are endangered. with any antivirus and OS. but if you only download programs from verified, well known sources, you are safe. I have been using my Windows machine for years with internet always on without any infection. that defender thing is doing pretty ok.

Pretty sure Kaspersky was rumored to be spyware for the Russian government. However I'm not sure if those allegations were proven false.

Question: why does Windows Defender perform so much worse in these kind of tests than it does for the labs?

Would you also be able to try these sort of tests on the ATP (Advanced Threat Protection; it's for business/enterprise) version of Microsoft Defender? Maybe also on Sophos Central/Cloud as well? I'm trying to decide which is best for my organization.
@TexSweden

windows defender is great now imho, but you should include more information on your test - which version of win10 is it, which version of defender, etc. try running it again after it missed one...the cloud should know about it now.

relax, unless you are going to manually run a ton of malware (what the test is doing) you are safe. just use only verified sources of programs not some weird stuff from the internet.

Guys, you can find all AV brands being fooled by ransom on youtube.... WD is a good solution for the common user. tip: enable anti-PUP feature running this command on powershell: *Set-MpPreference -PUAProtection Enabled* and restart the pc.

Here's a though, If there is no internet access than how does the ransomware know if the ransom has been payed or not? Basically if you dont have internet, and somehow you still got infected, you have 0 chance to get your stuff back even if you were to pay (also, how would you send bitcoins if you have no internet?). So in the end the ransomware isn't very smart either, it should detect that there is no internet access and point that out, otherwise the whole "ransom" scenario is moot.

The starting point of your video -- running a virtual machine -- points to a far more reliable and impervious approach to shielding one's PC from malware. I use Shadow Defender to easily create this virtual environment, with exceptions set up for folders where I *want* to have changes made (e.g. documents, pictures, videos, etc). If my machine gets infected, a simple reboot wipes it away. I'll periodically reboot without Shadow Defender to allow Windows to update itself.

i recently had a ''attack'' where i malwarebytes found ~60 spyware files or however its called. and around 12 trojans. there was also something called ''agent.deployer'' no idea what that is though xD someone suggested me tdsskiller wich worked for only 2 of the files windows defender did alot to quarantine most of them and then it forced a uninstall and when i logged back in all the files were back again. i used the free version of malwarebytes to scan the whole pc that seemed to work for me. im having no problems anymore at all
