Thanks for the encouragement! I just read an article about that today. My gut feeling is that this beta driver will mean you don't have to put in all the custom VM configuration parameters targeted at tricking Windows into thinking it's not running on a VM. This would mean the QEMU XML config file will be a lot cleaner. When you install the Nvidia drivers, you won't get the infamous code 43.

Love this video and helpful to me. This is very smart way to do things. You and I came to same conclusion. Windows releases new updates that create and manufacture bugs. Like on my current system, I can't use ALT+TAB, or I can but it takes like 15 to 30 seconds to flip to different app. Then, Explorer keeps crashing bad, and then that crashes the main Explorer where I lose my desktop. It goes into a Blank Screen, and I have to rerun Explorer from TaskManager. I always keep it up because if I lose Desktop & main Explorer, then I can't do anything. So, it'd be nice just to have Windows virtualized, and I could delete off that VM. Then, go back to the original install. Thanks for showing the steps. I sure wish that that'd make this much easier to do.

Had an issue with the mouse I think because I need to move the mouse directly to the guest , I’ll figure this out later.

Dude, you are a master. But I didn't understand the use of the hardware. You assign the GPU and those cores to the VM with Windows. But if the VM isn't active, can those GPU and cores be utilized in Linux? (In my case, I want to use the GPU in Linux for running AI tasks like Stable Diffusion or Llama). Or, as you showed at the end, should I create another VM just for Stable Diffusion and use the GPU in another VM with Linux? Has anything changed in all of this after these 2 years? I'm using Linux Mint nowadays. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
@davidsdetaileddiscussions

thanks for the compliment. if the VM isn't active, the gpu and cores cannot be used by the host OS. They are set apart for the VM only. You can, as you say, create a VM for Stable Diffusion. Only one of those VMs can be active at any one time.

Great video! I have a gaming laptop, i7 11th Gen, Nvidia 3080 with 32 gb ram. I spent the last 4 days trying to repair windows 10 from it's unbootable BSOD state. Guess what broke my Windows. A completed Restore Point, which I only did because it was running laggy. Smh. The 4 days were spent trying to repair windows so I can keep my files and settings. Tried EVERY method I could find on www, and nothing worked. So tomorrow I'll do a clean wipe and reinstall. I toyed with the idea of making Linux, and your video tipped the scale. Side booting Linux (PopOS and XeroLinux we're standout best) worked well for games, so I'm cautiously hopeful that your setup will be the best of both worlds. 2 questions: 1) Is there a way around the bios requirements? My bios looks rather limited in choices. 2). Are you able to redirect your cpu and gpu power on the fly or does it require a system reset and removing the configurations? Sorry for being long winded. Thanks again!
@davidsdetaileddiscussions
2 жыл бұрын
hi Jacob, I think the main issue with doing this on a laptop is that there's no way to switch monitor inputs. The way this setup works is that the output for the integrated graphics powering the host goes to one monitor and the output for the dedicated graphics powering windows goes to another monitor (or alternatively, two HDMI ports on the same tv). With a laptop, both the outputs of the integrated and dedicated graphics go to the laptop screen, and switching is done by the laptop outside of the user's control. To answer your questions: certain bios settings need to be enabled. It could be that they are on by default for your laptop but the only way to confirm is to try it, risking wasting all the time if it doesn't work. While you can redirect the cpu and GPU settings to each VM on the fly, these resources will be unavailable to the host without removing the settings and doing a system restart. Then, they will be unavailable to guest VM until applying the settings and doing another system restart. So in that case, I think it's probably better to dual boot, and maybe share the drives for each os on the other so you have access to all the files

i know this video is a year old so i doubt someone is going to answer, but if there is even the smallest chance i think it's worth trying your video in general is excellent, but i have one question, you said your host operating system has only 1 cpu core allocated and integrated graphics, does it mean it's permanent and it uses this setup all the time or does it mean it uses this setup only when windows vm is running and if it's off it's using all 6 cores and external gpu? i want my main os (Linux Mint) to use my cpu (i7 7700K) and gpu (rtx 2060) fully and not the integrated cpu graphics and only 1 core when windows vm is off and to use 1 cpu core out of 4 and integrated graphics when my windows vm is running, i just want to make sure i understand everything correctly before i start doing anything
@davidsdetaileddiscussions
2 жыл бұрын
yes, it's permanent, or at least, until the next reboot. the configuration turns off the cpu cores and the GPU and makes them unavailable in the host Linux os, so that the VM can use them exclusively. if you want to give the host full access, then you need to not use this configuration, but the VM will be virtualized and the performance will suffer due to sharing resources

Can this kind of thing work on a laptop? I have integrated intel graphics plus a mobile RTX 2060. Or does it have to be a desktop where the graphics card has a direct output?

There's probably better guides besides this one for Ryzen 3600X. But, first you need two graphics cards and a motherboard that supports two graphics cards.

you can try going through with this guide. if it doesn't work then return the Mobo. or look in the BIOS to see if there's any options you can turn on for iommu or virtualization.

Hi I want to build a super beefy system. With a 3080 and want to connect it through gpu passthrough. Do you think it's okey to use integrated intel i9 as the gpu?. I don't see to many examples of these system using such high end configs that's why I asked.
@davidsdetaileddiscussions
3 жыл бұрын
yes, it's definitely ok, but you need to make sure to buy a cpu with integrated graphics (doesn't end in F), and make sure the motherboard also supports GPU Passthrough (which shouldn't be a problem on high end motherboards)

@@davidsdetaileddiscussions yeah I was actually thinking of getting an AMD because I felt they were always nice with providing the driver's for Linux, plus I loved ryzen. But I feel like Intels new chips all come with integrated graphics so they are the better option. Also will you be making a new walkthrough video now that Nvidia just allowed the GPU pass through for one 1 VM?
@davidsdetaileddiscussions
3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I'm familiar with GPU passthrough for only one VM. One dedicated GPU can only be used by one VM at a time regardless if the GPU is NVIDIA or AMD. That's why we disable the GPU for the host in the video. However, you can set up multiple VMs to use the same GPU, but you can only have one of those VMs running at any one time. You can have multiple VMs running that don't use the dedicated GPU at any time.
