Hi Mike, I would definitely recommend you starting with wines you like. Initially I wouldn’t by 3 of each while you are experimenting. What I did was I spent about 5 years tasting as much wine as I could. This was in 1993 when I started with wine. Once you have a sense of what you like I would start purchasing 2 to 3 of each. You do this so you can taste the wine evolve over time. 3 bottles are ideal for this. I will also say that your tastes will evolve and change too. So don’t buy a ton of any one thing unless you are certain. What you like a lot today might not be the same tomorrow. Experimenting is the best part of this hobby…so drink on! 😊

Great update, I also picked up a bottle of Ovid 2018 recently. How many years do you typically like Ovid aged? There is a big debate on Napa wines, many believe you should drink them young, to preserve the fruit and intensity being their forte, and others like to tame the usually strong oak influence that is imparted with the high quality spare no expense barrels the wineries are using on their big cabs.

I think it’s totally style, so really depends how you like it. A vintage like 2019 for example is fantastic now but gets really good with about 7 years of age. I like my California and actually Washington state wines around 20 years old I average.

Thanks for the videos, really interesting to listen to and learn. If you were just starting out in 2023 with say $1000 to purchase some wine, what would you do? Would you buy one producer and as you say 2-3 bottles or spread it out over various producers? Would you go for $50-80 wines or 2-3 $2-300 bottles? I am a little unsure where to start in all honesty. So far I firing a bit from the hip! After watching a whole load of KZitem videos I have picked up 2 x 2017 Tropong Mondot, 1 x 2013 Casanova Di Neri Brunello, 1 x 2013 Bionde Santi (non-riserva) Brunello, 2 x 2020 Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino, 1 x 2018 Gran Enemigo El Cepillo, 1 x 2020 Le Serra Nuova Dell’Ornellaia and 1 x 2011 Vin Tondonia….what do you think? Also I would love to know what brand your wine racks are, the cellar looks fantastic! Thanks!
