Sideways gave birth to the new wine drinker and friend who claims they are into wine, but only drink Pinot Noir. Out of all the "overpriced" wines, the most common one I have gotten burned on has been pinot noir. Companies know.

You are right, cheaper Pinot Noirs in the USA tend to be not very exciting... Exception is the standard Pinot Noir by Au Bon Climat

I just got back from France. Now I can’t even get excited about American Pinot. Just not the same

The fact that a movie can dramatically impact the success or failure of a particular wine (merlot) reveals how easily influenced (manipulated?) the wine-buying audience can be.

Merlot always brings back a funny memory for me from Namibia. I was out in the bush with my PH and a filthy rich Yank. ( I was a back up gun) . He had brought a case of Petrus 1988 and we drank it out of stemless Tritan glasses. Amazing.

Just after he wounded a Cape Buffalo and it charged us. Mike and I stood and stopped it at 5 yards. The Yank had bolted. Mike broke the neck off a bottle and we smashed it. Petrus and raging adrenaline is a awesome combo. 💪💪😂

The funniest wine scene I’ve ever seen was in “The Cowboy Way”. Woody Harrelson is completely wasted in a swanky restaurant in NYC and not only was he nosing the wine, he was also swirling and LISTENING to the wine. The somm was passing out in disgust.

Two documentaries I enjoy are Blood Into Wine, which is about Maynard James Keenan and his vineyards and wineries (Caduceus and Merkin Vineyards) in Arizona, and Merlove. Merlove is a neat little documentary about the wonders of merlot and the idiocy of the whole Sideways "I am NOT drinking any effing merlot!" effect that destroyed merlot sales - but gave us some incredible buying opportunities. Being from Washington state, I enjoyed Merlove since it featured some of the giants of the Washington state wine world in it. :) Yeah, I am a little biased. LOL

Sideways is of course THE ULTIMATE wine film. I love that movie so much, had to think of it last Sunday when I was drinking '00 eiswein from plastic cups because I was on a boat with the kids :'). I haven't even seen Bottleshock yet, I never knew Eliza Dushku was in it too. Now I have double the reason to finally watch it. And uhm, I get why anyone would love watching a Good Year b/c of Cotillard, but for me Russel Crowe is a hard reason never to watch it again.

Eiswein in a plastic cup????!!! hahahahah. Bottleshock is a cute little film, I saw it when I knew nothing about wine. Admittedly, Russel Crowe is a little too gruff in A Good Year. Are there any wine films you like that I missed?

It's interesting to note that Miles is mixing. He is taking meds and drinking wine in the movie. Also a good general rule of thumb is to drink no wine under 50 F. Can't go wrong...

The Bond scene might (might!) be on purpose. Bond is supposed to be a rough, edgy character who doesn't care about doing things right, or even does them wrong on purpose (hence shaken vodka martini).

The book "A Good Year is much better than the film, as far as plot and story narrative, though watching Marion Cottillard is always enjoyable. I found Sideways mildly amusing, but after a while I started to hate Miles for being such a whiner. Yes, it gave way to oceans of mediocre PN in the States and globally as well, good Merlot was and always will be great. Bottle Shock took large amounts of artistic license in telling the tale of the Judgement of Paris, I've read once or twice that the late Steven Spurrier nearly sued the film's producer or director for portraying him so terribly. Other parts of the story veer pretty far away from the facts, though Alan Rickman is a fun actor to watch. A big part of the problem is that Hollywood all too often stereotypes and caricaturizes people in the wine industry and/or wine lovers as being arrogant and snobbish. Yes, there are some of those types out there, but equally there are many fine, kind, professional, warm and humble MWs, MSs, wine educators, critics, KZitemrs, salespeople and wine geeks/aficionados.

I don’t think he was “poopooing” on merlot bc he didn’t like it. It reminded him too much of his ex-wife bc they would drink it together

@@drmatthewhorkey neither did I lol. That’s the irony of his character. He loves merlot so it makes the drop in demand even funnier bc it means ppl didn’t understand the movie
