Wing Chun Beginners' Mistakes in Chi Sau. I find that most beginners will practice single hand chi sau correctly. But when they move to double hand chi sau, often their progress slows as they keep making the mistakes I highlight here. Some of these mistakes include:
1) Practising "egotistically" - that is, beginners often focus on "winning" and "hitting". That is NOT what they should be aiming for. Chi sau is a useful tool for practising your Wing Chun structures in a dynamic environment and for honing your sensitivity. Students that focus solely on trying to hit each other inevitably tense up, resort to bruce force and ultimately derive very little benefit from the exercise.
2) Practising "robotically" - instead of thinking and testing their structures, students can instead come to resemble two robots alternating between two fixed positions (eg bong sau to tan sau and repeat, instead of thinking and probing all the possibilities that also lie BETWEEN those two movements.
3) Going too far the other way - i.e., now they are not trying to hit each other, but now they also have no forward intention or focus.
I find that if beginners focus on what they should be trying to achieve that is, use the opportunity with a training partner (and I emphasise to students that they should view them as such - a training partner, not a sparring partner) to work on their sensitivity and structure. If they can do so, they I find that they progress much faster in developing their Wing Chun skills via chi sau.
