There are secret moves for long distance fighting in Wing Chun . There's a leaping move for bridging the gap quickly and there is a wide side ways stance also which is hidden in the Dragon Pole Form.

I'm a taiji mantis practitioner, and am somewhat familiar with wing chun as well. I have to say his interpretation of the styles is pretty surface level--which makes me question if he can use them in combat at all. 1) Distance, footwork, and bridging, for example, give context and depend upon one another in application; the isolated way he interpreted and presented them renders them completely useless. 2) The way he presented the philosophy of mantis through counterstriking after contact--rather than bridging as a means of keeping track of the opponent while aggressively entering and closing distance--shows how superficial his understanding and ability is. Please be skeptical of how Chinese martial arts is represented online.

There's just too much noise on the subject, especially on youtube. It's one of the first things I learned when I started learning Wing Chun. You have to already know what you're doing, so you can filter out the nonsense, before you can take away anything from videos like this on youtube. That's not to say that defeats the purpose, because it's still a great way to see whether you understand what you do and why, yourself, but it takes some time before you can apply it. His footwork in the Wing Chun part of the video is simply wrong. Stances are often too wide and his feet aren't pointing in the right direction. Not to mention his centre line. I don't know a lot about the Mantis style, but judging from the stability of his stance he's probably not executing that properly. Some of the principals of Wing Chun he got right, though, but in application this goes straight out the window again. And on others he's just completely making things up. I see this with too many videos on martial arts and Wing Chun in particular where people think they understand, but don't and then going about making videos. It's giving the art and traditional martial arts in general a bad name. If you want to learn a martial art, look up a good teacher; one that can explain how he uses and applies his techniques and (most importantly) why. If they know what they're talking about, they'll be more than happy to explain and demonstrate this.

You have to modify techniques, no matter what martial art, to make them effective in a street fight, because you have to consider the circumstances that you may face. Many of the circumstances faced today are different from when many martial arts were first developed. Everything must evolve in order to maintain usefulness.

Frankly, I'm a fan of both styles. I studied a little wing chun with Sifu Mantu Isham (Atl,Ga.), who was also a Northern style Mantis master and 5th generation master, Sifu Gin Foon Mark (St.Paul/Mn) of southern Mantis fame. Unfortunately, because of career, life circumstances and such, I wasn't able to attain the level of proficiency of either but the goal was to be fluent enough in both because I think both are deadly and complimentary styles. Now, in my later years I have the time, but no teacher...bummer.

Based on everything I've heard, I believe your philosophy is flawed, like it was hammered into you like a religion. I get it, that's the whole raw problem with martial arts. People forget that forms are not for fighting. They are for strength and something to build off of. Wing Chun and Mantis are as strong as any other martial art out there if you think like a fighter. Because a fighter learns methods and adapts them to application. In this since Wing Chun & Mantis become a long range to all the way to grappling. No its not no BJJ, but if you learn and understand the forms, both are not about strength, but more about leverage. Strength is nothing without resistance. So to answer the question you ask: they are both garbage; because if you limit them to that thought you will never adapt or evolve. I practice Wing Chun & Xingyi while learning the forms Mantis, Taichi, bagua, Some White Crane and the one thing I do know all the forms I find have all the same rules "leverage" In form they all look different, but in application they all become the same. Then here comes the crazy part if you learn the styles correct, you'll see they all have the same principles as basic boxing. MMA gyms make this clear from the beginning while it takes years for TMA to figure it out.

You don't understand the kicking in Wing Chun or it's application. The kicks are designed to be able to completely stay balanced in your stance and kick while tossing your leg weight not your mass into the enemy. If the enemy grabs your leg, and is able to push you, we step back easily. So not to fall. Same with a pull, we step in without falling. But the kicks are long range. We step in as we kick. I can do the Basic Wing Chun King at a person who is 6 feet from me. You don't seem to understand the kicks, no offense.

I think that it comes down to long range and short range. No versus at all. If long range is no longer feasible and the opponent gets inside the long range then having short range techniques can close those openings. In arnis there is both long and short range techniques that teach one to read your opponent, that's why Bruce Lee trained with Dan Inosanto and came up with Jeet June Do. Flexibility in ones attack and defense is the key. You are well versed in both styles now combine them so there is no versus. They both have their strengths and weaknesses. Close off the weaknesses and consolidate the strengths.

Pray mantis will never work on the streets. Wing Chun will because is a Chinese boxing styled. And it has been tested on the st. But it takes time to learn.
