Our research collection comprises 12,000 historical mounted bird specimens. Each one is a contemporary witness - unique to a particular place and time! We can use them to demonstrate changes, for example in climate change, ecosystem change, species loss and the role of humans in this. Now we are in the process of networking the knowledge about these objects and making it accessible to everyone.
An important component in the cataloguing and development of this collection is the restoration and conservation of its objects. In the case of the mounted bird specimens, all the more so because a large proportion were damaged during the Second World War. To ensure that they can continue to provide us with new knowledge and new ideas in the future, teamwork is required in addition to modern technology.
A film team accompanies the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin on its way into the future. On KZitem you can become part of our Museum Evolution!
The earth is changing. Every second. For 4.56 billion years. But this change is happening too fast lately! This is shown by the speed of species extinction and climate change.
We are making the museum fit for new challenges, also structurally. As a place where, in future, a million visitors a year will be able to exchange ideas about the preservation of our natural foundations of life. And as a place where more than 200 scientists are already researching life and the earth. We are catapulting the 30 million objects in our collection into the future - analogue and digital. For all of us! So that we can work together on solutions - for nature and the cohesion of society.
