Across the Intermountain West, hundreds of volunteers and biologists come together during short windows during peak migration to scan the landscape for shorebirds. For these birds, habitats like the wetlands surrounding Great Salt Lake are the key to surviving their thousand-plus mile migratory journeys.
The Intermountain West Shorebird Survey is a region-wide effort to document shorebirds during their peak migrations along the Pacific Flyway. With a lapse of 30 years since comparable surveys have been completed, this shorebird census provides invaluable data to inform habitat management decisions for the conservation of shorebirds and the habitats they rely on.
