That this van has no shift on the fly, like ALL my other trucks and cars, is STUPID. It would be different if this was a true 4X4 truck, but this is a light duty delivery van and you have to be at a complete stop to change from 2x4 to 4x4 is inexcusable. 'The roads just got really bad on the interstate and I'm in a $200K rear wheel drive van, that is the most vulnerable to loss of traction, but I have to stop to shift into 4x4???' Ridiculous.

my 21 tacoma offroad 4x4 is finicky like this too, not just sprinters. dealer told me it's normal, come to a stop, park, neutral, reverse, etc. in built sprinters, theres so much weight over the rear tires (especially compared to an empty bed), I wouldn't be as concerned with instant loss of traction, as I think you're anticipating. However, do I wish that sprinters could switch on the fly? yes. The new sprinter awd should be fixing this (no idea when WB will build on this platform given the surplus of 4x4 revels), but I'll give that 4cyl TT awd platform a few years to work out its issues before I even consider upgrading.
