A great new article in Foreign Affairs dives into how our perceived expectations of a conflict shape how we view success or failure. For instance, Ukraine was deemed successful at the start of the war even though they lost vast amounts of terrain, simply because they didn't capitulate. However during their counteroffensive this past summer, they regained territory but it has largely been viewed as a failure because it wasn't enough. Both have to do with how expectations have been laid out by internal and external actors.
