yes I think you're right Renee, it sounds as if it may have gone off. It may still perform to an extent but chances are the structure of the aged medium will not be how it should be and will impair the results of your painting.

SO HELPFUL. Quick question, why can’t I use with ultramarine?

Thanks for the demonstration! It sounds like the second medium/additive you bring up is gum arabic? Much appreciated! 🎨

You are correct, Winsor have now discontinued this Water Colour Medium. On their website they recommend Ox Gall Liquid as an equivalent... "Ox Gall liquid has same benefits as Water Colour Medium i.e. it is a wetting agent that can be mixed directly with water colours to improve their flow."

Will it still granulate after drying on the palette and then rewetting with water for the next painting session? Or do you need to rewet with more granulation medium?

Hi there, thank you for your comment and question. As the medium essentially separates the pigment and binder, potentially you wouldn't want to come back to it after you have finished painting as you might find it has separated too much and becomes unworkable. Realistically if you just add water to rewet, it will in essence dilute the granulation medium further and so the strength of colour will also be diluted. We hope this helps, all the best, the Jackson's team

So I have a bottle of this watercolor medium I found in my dad's old art supplies. While I'm definitely the first to open it, it's brown and smells REALLY STRONGLY of vinegar. Is this still okay to use? I'm guessing it's about fifteen to twenty years old.

I am disappointed not to hear mention of the difficulty washing the medium out of the brush! this should not be used for plein aire painting as the medium will only come out of the brush with soap and vigorous washing.

I don't see the point of using the granulation medium for *already granulating colours*, but yeah sure, you do you. Use it on non-granulating colours and then I will be impressed.

Grainy texture an be achieved simply by using cheap watercolours.

An interesting thought! The mediums will offer more stability than the cheap watercolours...the graininess from cheap watercolours is caused by inadequate grinding of pigments and insufficient binding with gum arabic....I would be wary of colours retaining their strength on the work.
