Ever wonder how to backpack in the winter? I am still trying to figure it out. To be honest, I think this is the next step in backcountry skiing, I call it ski packing, but that name really doesn't mean anything to anyone. This video shows the basics of backpacking in the winter. All I can say is, stay warm!
As part of my training for my traverse across the Frank Church Wilderness, I decided to go out to my nearest mountain and hike and camp out on the top. Winter backpacking is a lot different than summer backpacking. For one, you need to keep warm at night, so a nice down sleeping back with a duck down filled sleeping pad helps. Also, travel in snow is difficult if you are not ski touring, the long surface area of your skis will help you travel with more ease. The right kind of tent will also be a choice that you have to make, I have a 4 season tent, it is on the heavy side, but I enjoy it.
My experience went well, I got cold at night, but it was good training to get my mind ready for what lay ahead. I still have a lot of training to do, but one step at a time will get me there.
