Watching during the pandemic from Eugene, Oregon. I hope we get snow this year, ideally around Christmas. We don't get much snow around here, but we're far enough north to get those long, dark December nights and cobalt blue twilight after sunset. The city lights at night in December have that same, familiar jewel-like glow here, too. Truly magical.

+Flankymanga Skoda cars are very popular here in Iceland. They have been for sale here like "forever" long before the VW corporation took over and modernized the brand. I loved seeing this video. I live here in Brazil and here we don't have snow. My country is really warm. I've never seen snow! By the way, I also liked to see the parked cars in the streets of the city at dawn. In the brazilian big cities this doesn't happen (only in the small towns people let their cars in the streets ) because if you let your car in the brazilian streets, at night, there are a lot of robbers... In the other day your car can't be there. I saw another interesting thing: The highway is illuminated. Usually our highways aren't like this. If you want to drive at night here in my country, obviously you need to turn your car's headlight on. I really loved this video and I loved the snow falling on the car wheeling in the Iceland highway.
@finnurth
7 жыл бұрын
Edilson Palmieri Thank you for watching and commenting! The highway you see is actually just between suburbs so yes, they are illuminated. If you leave the city area and drive in the countryside then we have no illumination, just reflective wooden sticks by the side of the road. It's a good thing that we can drive in the countryside and park somewhere safe (out of traffic) and turn the lights off and experience pitch black night in the winter. That makes the night sky clearly visible which is fantastic especially if we have auroras (northern lights) dancing in the sky! :)

Some will think I'm stupid, but I would like it to be another real winter with us. For years there has hardly been a real winter here in the federal state of Hesse. It used to be different, even in Frankfurt am Main, known for its airport, even there there was snow, 100 meters above sea level. Today there is only snow with rain in Frankfurt, if at all, nothing remains, 100 meters above sea level. As a small child, my grandmother was able to pull me on the Main (river through Frankfurt) with the sledge. If someone thinks that people would be happy about it, they are only partially right, the older people, to whom I belong, miss the real winter. I am 70 years old and I have to say that, as it is at the moment, too warm for this time of year, it is 10 ° C plus. We're not doing so well there, the older people have a problem with that, me too. We used to have very cold winters, so by our standards. We had -5 ° C during the day and 12 ° C at night. If I had money like I don't have, I would move to Reykjavik, that's not a joke, I'm honest. I think your country is really great even though I've never been there. Well, now I'm not moving either, at 70 it's too late, and our children are here and I don't want to leave them. But I am trying to visit your country once, I think it will be very beautiful!

I find it quite likely that we will have snow by then. The weather in the Reykjavik area has been quite ridiculous so far, while countries like Sweden have been having bad weather including heavy snowfall for the past few weeks, we are having none of that. It's still in the second week of December and it's all clear, very calm weather and temperatures around 5 to 9 C (41 to 48.2 F). It's a stark contrast compared to last year.

If you are prepared to go to other parts of Iceland, you will definitely encounter snow in the coming weeks. The weather in the capital region has not been as warm as now for the past 100 years! @finnurth
8 жыл бұрын
Stygian Doll The roads in the fairly densly populated greater Reykjavik area (capital) get salted quite abit. The weather is usually changing all the time so the conditions are unpredictable. The weather is more stable in northern Iceland, colder and more snow during the winter. Thank you for watching and commenting!
@chrismarkakis1871
8 жыл бұрын
+finnurth how many snowfalls u got in iceland approximately per winter?
@finnurth
8 жыл бұрын
+Chris Markakis That's a tough one, no way to predict. However in southwestern part of Iceland, the capital region, snow can arrive as early as October but can also more commonly stay away throughout most of December and the first proper snow can arrive around x-mas time. In the northern part of Iceland snow is more common and can sometimes snow every day and it arrives earlier, and more importantly, the snow stays put! In Reykjavik area the snow can fill the streets one day and be gone the next. We have a lot of rain in Iceland, and this year the month of October we had all time rain record in Reykjavik but it was relatively warm, so no snow. We now see snow in the mountains in the capital area, those mountains are just only about 900 m high above sea level.

I do not know number of days with actual snow fall, only the number of days with snow or rain. You can google translate this page: www.vedur.is/um-vi/frettir/nr/3271

why did you drive in the left hand lane?
@finnurth
7 жыл бұрын
Hi Александр Буланов, thank you for watching and commenting! In the beginning, from minute 8:49 I am going faster than the drivers on the right lane, even though the Porsche on my right does catch up with me a couple of times. Nobody is behind me. At 9:58 I catch up with a couple of cars but the tunnel is ending and I have no idea how the conditions are exiting the tunnel so I slow down. By right I should move over to the right lane there, and if conditions would have been better, I would have! Here I find safer to use the space and stay on the left side instead of changing lanes with my car, that is equipped with automatic gear box (if I use manual, I would press down the clutch and move over easily, I find automatic more unpredictable). At 11:08 I let the cars pass me and right after, with no cars around, I move over to the right lane and stay there until I make a left turn on 12:48. Normally, when conditions are better, I use left lane only for passing. in Iceland drivers have the tendency to stay on the left side and cars keep passing the right. That is of course dangerous and I am very much against it, but it is unfortunately part of the driving culture in Iceland, especially on local roads like this within the city limits.

We prefer to use good winter tires, some also prefer them to be studded. I you are using a rental car I think they will come with good winter tires. Roads are cleared of snow pretty quickly here and in the capital region the the weather changes so quickly that the snow doesn't stay for long anyways. I also recommend that your rental car will have some type of all wheel drive system, does not have to have the option of permanent 4WD as long as you are staying within the normal road system. Off road driving is forbidden and is anyway not covered by any insurance here and that includes also many roads in the high lands. I was able to drive everywhere before the snow was cleared in the record snowfall (for capital region) of 20 inches (51 cm) using Honda CRV, model 2006, all wheel drive using studded winter tires. See: kzitem.info/news/bejne/r4qtrKWqk35lpag I hope that you will have a great trip to Iceland, remember, the weather is always changing, so expect any type of weather at anytime!
@flyabouthereandthere

finnurth WOW thanks again for the info. Yeah I did some research and had found that the road 1 is the first to be cleared which is good since our travels will mostly consist of driving on that road - we are going to visit the south area but still will take things slow and according to the weather. If I remember correctly our rental is a 4WD but need to check regarding tyres to see if they will be studded or not but once again thanks for the info! We can't wait to visit!!!

@finnurth
8 жыл бұрын
+Nick Karipidis I use about 12-13,5 liters per 100 km in town which is my usual driving. Driving in the countryside will consume about 9 liters/100 km. 1 liter costs today 190 ISK/ liter which is 1.71 USD, or 6.47 USD / Gallon. I have been driving about 2100 km / month so I guess I have been consuming about 277 liters /month which makes around 52800 ISK or 474 USD in petrol/gas per month. My commute to work is only about 10 minutes drive, but I do drive a lot extra.

+Nick Karipidis You can see the relevant information here: www.rsk.is/english/individuals/tax-liability/ Take note in the text that from those percentages we have a tax credit of 51920 ISK per month that is DEDUCTED from your calculated tax. That means of you have a very low income of 139899 ISK per month (maybe low paid part time work) that your calculated tax will be cancelled out by the tax credit and your tax will be 0%. 139899 ISK is about 1264 USD or 1139 EUR or 1013 GBP.

Adam wickerts No snow at all for the past few days in the capital region where I live! It's almost like spring, temperatures around 6 to 11 C. But of course, we are still in the middle of the winter so things can change very quickly. :)
