In summer make sure to leave the tree straps dangling so rain water drains down the strap, or else it wicks down into the end of your hammock. The site shows exactly why I love hammocks year ‘round, you sure couldn’t put a tent there!

Nice Jess! My go-to shelter system is a Warbonnet Blackbird XLC hammock with an Aqua Quest 10x13 Defender tarp. Having a double botton hammock is beneficial in both spring and summer by preventing mosquitoes from biting through and in the winter for holding an insulating pad. An insulating bottom quilt is a good idea AND Onewind sells a really nice quilt protector which keeps the quilt dry, blocks the wind and does add some insulation.

If you are canoe camping in a area like the B.W.C.A. you are supposed to camp in designated site's. But there are time's that a strong wind can come up and force you to shore before reaching a site that hopefully is unoccupied. A hammock is a great way to camp once you learn all the in's and out's. It's a versatile way to wait the weather out in quickly changing conditions.

Excellent point, Scott! We have had a few trips in the back country where the ground was largely un-tent worthy. Having the option to do either ground or hammock makes a lot of sense.

It looks like good kit. Probably more comfortable - or less slouchy - with an air mattress or sleeping pad to level it out a bit. You'll probably also appreciate an underquilt/blanket to protect from cold wind.

I have a Jerven bag that unzip the ends of so it becomes a tube and use around my hammock. Super cozy. Something to try out since I know you have a Jerven. Just make sure that hanging inside the bag doesn't apply stress on the zippers of the bag which could damage them.

@@EnduranceRoom I have the King SIze specifically for this use case because it gives me more room. I can have the ridge line inside the bag so it becomes a tiny hammock tent. Only problem is that the hammock is longer than the bag diagonally so parts of the hammock stick out outside the bag. Has to be managed if it rains or is windy.

An interesting set up , I've used hammocks only in various jungles around the world. I've never really considered them for temperate or alpine region's. In colder temperatures I prefer to ground dwell next to a fire . I'll be in Scotland in a week or so and think I may dig out the old hammock and see how it works . Great video, Cheers mate .

Thanks Paul. Lately, I have been working them in as an option to have on hand in case ground isn’t ideal. I am using it in conjunction with my jerven, which functions sort of like a top and bottom quilt. Pretty excellent combination. Enjoy Scotland. That sounds like an awesome trip. 🤝

Do you know that problem with hammocks ? you just chilled down and you have a nice pillow under your head, then you get up a little to skin up some weed to chill even better. Now you are ready to chill back again to smoke and enjoy, but your pillow is not there any more. You start to panik, you get tangelt up in the hammock and then you are falling down on your shot gun, a shot is getting fired, it hits your friend and you end up in a total disaster. Only becource the pillow fell of the hammock. It happends all the time. I made my selfe a sack for my pillow with a cord atached to the ridgeline to awoied loosing it, it works very well. I used a sleepingbag bag, put a smal hole in the bottom and fidelt the cord though it. And I never fell on my shot gun again , that is pretty cool , I was running out of friends ; ) DeinStamm

Hammock camping is outstanding, my only complaint with this camping is it’s hard to find a tarp that is wider than the hammock itself. There are not many 9ft hammocks made, to where a 10ft tarp with cover the ends so rain doesn’t slip in by your lines…

I use a structural ridgeline on my hammocks. This is super helpful for getting a consistent hang - both in terms of the sag of the hammock, and the arrangement under the tarp. The general recommendation is to have the structural ridgeline be 83% of the hammock length - and experiment from there. So, a 11ft / 132 inch hammock will be 9.13 ft / 109.5 inch when actually hung. That is still tight for a 10ft tarp, given the additional length for the suspension connection. But, every little bit helps. A 12ft x 9ft (4m x 3m) tarp is my preference for general hammock camping. With an 11ft hammock + a structural ridgeline, I have about 18 inches of cover over each end of the hammock.
