Located in the Northwestern Corner of Massachusetts, Mount Greylock is the state's highest point at 3489 feet above sea level. The Bellows Pipe Trail is a popular hiking route to the summit, and is a 6.5 mile roundtrip hike that has an elevation gain of nearly 2300 feet. This trail is situated nearby the Thunderbolt Ski Trail, which is a well maintained backcountry ski trail that has a vertical drop of more than 2000 feet.
I have long wanted to snowboard down this trail. The trail is hit or miss, and largely depends on local snowfall. I finally decided that I would attempt to snowboard down this trail in March 2023. Unfortunately I found the conditions to be less than desirable. The day before saw warm temperatures on the mountain which caused the snow to warm up and melt. Overnight, the temperatures got cold again which caused the snow to freeze up. This created a very firm and icy snow surface and I had difficulty "catching an edge" in the snow. I made the most of it as I viewed being able to snowboard down the mountain as a reward for hiking up. I intended to film most of the Thunderbolt Ski Trail (when I was going down), but decided against it due to the conditions.
