Me and my happy little trees and funny skis. :) I admire one of Bob's famous quotes: "You can do anything here-the only prerequisite is that it makes you happy" and of course I'm envious of his full head of hair. Thanks for tuning in and I hope you have a great weekend.

Thanks so much Tom. I've appreciated the videos you have made that truly demonstrate the reality of back country skiing that isn't of the limb snapping wild variety. All the best mate.

This is my favourite skiing channel. It captures the essence of ski touring - making the most of your local environment, enjoying the peace and serenity of the mountains and the companionship of like minded friends. Learning and honing your skills over a lifetime whether they be skiing technique, photographic or equipment. Watching from Australia as I do your channel is a wonderful dose of winter in our long hot summer; and now as the winter is approaching I can't wait to dust off the skis and squeeze my arthritic old ankles back into the boots. We have a song about cross country skiing that we sing around the campfire from time to time. I will write it out for your amusement: My skis are waxed My socks are red, I sleep in a tent and never in a bed, And I'll ski 100miles before the day is through, Because I'm an old ski tourer... I herringbone up hills, I telemark down, I'm always smiling, I never frown. I eat macaroni and I drink a lot of tea, cos I am an old ski tourer, From Kiandra to Kosciusko over the main range I will go, through blinding sun and driving snow, Cos I am an old ski tourer. When the day does come, I can ski no more, I'll take myself out of my tent door, And i'll throw away my skis and I'll lie down in the snow, and I'll die like an old ski tourer.

Thanks Adrian for your thoughts and for posting the song lyrics. Do you have a link to a KZitem video where I can hear the song being sung? Just by coincidence, the video I'm posting this Friday is a music video with a song I created using AI software. The AI software has added some new spark to my creative side. It will be interesting to see what others think. We just picked up some fresh Spring snow today, so I plan to head out tomorrow with the leathers and Sbound 98's. I always enjoy your posts and I hope you have a great ski season.

Lol it's only the little group of people I go skiing with that know this song. No recordings thankfully! It is sung to the tune of an old shearing song from the 1880s when Australia rode on the sheep's back. It's an easy song to make up words to about any activity really. kzitem.info/news/bejne/xXpuqotjsGmBpY4si=goW3cl9_ZXhLslxX

Like many have already commented, Tom has had a profound impact on my life. At best, most of us might have a positive impact on a few people around us - through this channel, Tom has gone beyond that. From my perspective, Tom has done at least two things here: 1. He’s been a great source of information and advice for many who want to take up, or advance this type of skiing - and maybe of greater value; 2. Has radiated happiness, peace, and goodwill out into the world from this channel, which is no small accomplishment in the world as it is today. Tom, you have been a source of inspiration and enjoyment for me for years, and I wish you well in whatever lies ahead for you (and Julie), and for this channel!

Thanks @stefanodeste4930. Spring is a time of rebirth for most people, but this year seems very different for me. Julie says that I'm happiest when the ski season starts and saddest when it ends. I really appreciate you taking the time to link up this year. We had some great discussions and some great skiing, and all the positive comments in regard to this channel really help to put me back on track. Take care and have a great summer.

When it comes to summer and your channel, I have some proposition. Have you ever heard about cross skating? It is a relatively new sport, mainly known in Alpine countries (e.g. Austria or Germany), in Scandinavia, and is slowly becoming recognized in my country (Poland). Winter has been short for the last 20 years, and I love cross country and back country skiing (with free heel as well as alpine touring), so I was looking for a summer replacement. In 2021, a friend introduced me to cross skating and I bought the Skike V9 Tour 200mm model. Also several other companies produce cross skates (e.g. Powerslide, SRB). Thanks to large inflatable wheels (150-200mm), you can enjoy skating not only on asphalt but also on packed earth and grass. You can ride classic style (one-way bearings on the front wheels) and skating style. For me it's like an extension of winter and I have so much fun!

Hi Tom. Your channel has had a rippling affect. Not only have I purchased xc-skis because of you but my wife with RA is now on ski's. We don't get out often but we really enjoy being outdoors and having this new hobby. Friends are super curious about what I know and what I buy. I said I learned it from Tom M on youtube! Your channel has boosted the local economy. I now have many pairs of skis and have a REI membership. We now take an annual xc ski trip up north to Vermont and rent a house and visit the local xc areas. We don't get a lot of snow in NY but I enjoy watching you ski and can only dream to have that amount of snow on the regular. I enjoy learning about the gear you use, the snow conditions and what they mean and how you chose your gear and why. I enjoy learning about your electric bikes and the adventures you take. Thanks for having this channel and sharing this part of your life with us. Its changed ours and has brought us joy. All the best to you.

Tom, Thanks for the videos, this one and all the ones before. I found your channel about 16 months ago when I decided to get back into cross country skiing (both Nordic center & in the backcountry) after a 20-year hiatus. You taught me about your approach to the sport; you introduced me to Telemark Talk; you introduced me to other KZitem channels; you showed me how you love to ski & make good friendships skiing. You helped me decide what gear to check out. I’m now watching mainly to see techniques & the beauty of where you ski; but my ears still perk up when you mention gear. I re-watch your videos often. I love the bike videos & the really old stuff from your well-spent youth. Rewatch them too. I think you should replace your lady’s wood skis! (I have sought out & love skiing on my new-to-me metal-edge, wood fjellskis!). I haven’t gone out solo skiing into the backwoods yet; one suggested video idea is the precautions you take for skiing alone. Haven’t found that old video yet. If you do decide to take a sabbatical from your channel, please leave it up so we can re-watch! Enjoy your life, enjoy your lady’s company, & have fun! Thanks for everything! Live well, Tom!

I'm glad you found the channel and that you have rebooted your freeheel journey. Thanks so much for the kind words and suggestions. I've often wondered what will happen over time to all the videos that KZitem has archived. They will certainly be a window into our time and life in the distant future. I sure hope that this sport will live on as long as there is snow and wild areas and I will do my best to keep it alive as long as I'm able. Take care and have an amazing summer.

Thanks for the season Tom. Snow has melted away in my area in Finland and skiing is on hold until November. I think I understand the feeling to stop making videos and just ski and enjoy outdoors. If you someday decide to stop, dont delete the channel. You have great informative videos of several subjects. I found your channel back then when I was looking for info about XCD skiing, and its been really helpful. Since then ive watched all the old videos of yours. Have a pleseant spring! Every season has its funs. Im going river canooing tomorrow.

Hi Curtis. The snow is pretty much gone at the lower elevations, but we still have good skiable snow at the higher elevations, it is just not very accessible. I plan to make the drive to Togwotee Pass tomorrow if the weather cooperates and that may cap out my skiing for this season. Thanks for tuning in and enjoy the change in season.

Tom, you inspired me to get the equipment and do some XCD skiing after the pandemic. XCD has a charm all its own and the barrier to entry is lower than AT skiing. I also love the GTNP area. Maybe future videos could showcase the area and places to go a bit more? Thank you for posting as always!

Hi Paul. I love skiing in Grand Teton National Park and do have some older videos with GTNP content. In 2022, the National Park Service implemented new guidance that prohibits KZitemr's from filming in National Parks without a permit. The problem with KZitem is that Google earns income from their ads, even if the creator is not earning any income. That severely limits my ability to create content in the park. I hope at some point the Park Service makes an exception, but for now it is just best to not post videos taken inside the Park. For others who might be reading this post, there is a great online resource for off trail nordic skiing in this area. jhnordic.com/ Thanks for tuning in and for posting.

@@tomm9850 Hey Tom, I don't think what you're doing requires a permit, as long as you're not trying to make money off of KZitem, regardless of what KZitem is doing with its ad policy. As long as you're not the one turning on the ads, I don't think that your videos meet the NPS requirement of commercial photography: As long as you don't have the intent of generating income, you're good to go. The filming of videos for social media just to post and share with people is not considered "commercial photography" and would be "personal use." Additionally, you could see about applying for a commercial photography permit for 1000+ days in length. Because your work is always 1-2 people (you and Julie or a visiting skiier) the rate is 0$/day, so you'd be stuck paying the $350 fee for the application, but still have "commercial" access. I'd also wager a guess that you've spoken with someone at the NPS though, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Kinda sad to hear you might shutter the channel, but I understand why you would. Even 1 video a year of a good ski run & you talking through what the past year was like for you would be nice. You got me into telemark skiing (although I can't make it down a hill without ending up on my butt several times) and I'm super thankful for the knowledge you've provided. I always try to leave a comment because I know how that means a lot more than a single view. And summer content is hard, with winter stuff it's different than what most people do and usually has good filmable sections of intensity. In the summer, it's much slower paced and more people are out doing it too, so it's harder to stand out. Also, what new mic did you get/are using?

I bought an instamic last spring, mostly for biking videos. instamic.io/ I have used it a few times this winter for skiing. It works very well, especially with the deadcat covering. The only way I currently have of attaching it to my body is with a magnetic clip, and I could easily loose the mic with one inadvertent bump on the downhill. Instamic now offers a GoPro type mount and I probably need to order one. kzitem.info/news/bejne/2pmczqtspWpqloY
