Not sure all your plans for your house but I know you mentioned concrete floors for solar heat gain. It's a great idea, just make sure you have your windows positioned in the best direction for your location to allow the most sun exposure in the winter months and then in the summer months the sun will be high and not heat the floors keeping your house cool. In college we used a text book called Mechanical and electrical equipment for Buildings by Walter T. Grondzik. It has a lot of passive means for solar heat gain and also passive cooling. Could be of some use for designing your house!

If I may, I'd like to suggest you build out, not up, since you have the room. As you get older, especially because you live with more wear and tear on your joints as those of us off-grid do, the stairs could pose a problem. We designed our cabin for all stages of life and it's only 14x36. It has everything - a kitchen, living room, washer and dryer, bathroom and bedroom with two huge closets and enough space for a king sized bed and two nightstands. And there's no need to climb stairs.
@sweetybear4600

I hadn’t thought of that aspect. I did however think about how hard it is to heat a larger space especially with a second story. I hope they can find information on historical aspects of architecture that allowed people to live in relative comfort. I know there are a lot of “earth ships” “hill homes” etc but let’s face it, the Amish live off grid and in complete comfort. So that knowledge isn’t gone. Maybe a second story for a loft/attic for storage if it’s all insulated enough, and can be closed off so it doesn’t take their heat. So now I’m doubly thinking, old age AND heating/cooling might indicate one story is better. Like you said, plenty of room.
@oboe906

I agree. My grandmother told this to my parents when they baught their house. Now they are 80 years old and the stairs are the problem. But also we live in a very cold area and with an upper level the bottom heats the top, so you get double the use of the heat. So many things to think about. Love this channel ❤️.

Another channel, Trent and Allie designed their own home. They realized after building it that they’d made a lot of rookie mistakes. Their advice was, get real plans that are similar to what you want by a licensed architect then make small customizations to it. They said their build would have gone much better if they had. I know you’re having fun, I know you love to learn things, but you’ll be learning plenty just building the house. You don’t need the headaches.

It’s not a competition between the channel. Their situations are similar in so far as they’re both building houses and they both are designing their own. Of course there are differences! That’s the beauty of life! My comment was simple, others have walked this path and have regrets. Just out of curiosity, do you dislike all trained professionals or only architects? There is nothing wrong with getting help, advice, or paying a professional for their skills. They’ll presumably be building their house for quite some time so it’s not like they won’t get to learn and experience a variety of skills that will last their lifetime. They will probably get so good at it that the next thing they build will be even better, and so on and so forth. Obviously it’s very fine if they don’t seek outside advice, help, or purchase plans. In my mind I saw it like when he took the Subaru into the shop and learned from the professionals how to work on it, and continued to go back there to get it worked on. I also don’t want them to have any regrets. It’s not like they’re going to be able to get a do over on the house.

It’s somewhat expensive up front, but will save you thousands in the long run and will provide the most comfortable temperatures year round. Oh and make your stair treads all the same width and height. Steps of differing measurements are the single most dangerous tripping /falling hazard in a home.

I'm sure you are studing all you wind options but I'm 80 and all we had was to pump water was a ten ft bladed windmill and it was a 1932 model and they never ware out, and when the winds get to strong it has a spring loaded tail that snaps shut and stops it from spinning, we all so had a big hole under it and it was wrapped in gunny sacks woven together and the pipe from the well to the top always leaked and it ran into the gunny sacks and we hung meat in the hole and it was really cold down there. It worked all year round and also aged the meat too. I've aged meat hanging for 64 days and nothing would bother it as the cold kept the sent down to nothing to attact varmits, I can tell how to cut it up later if need be, by the way I've never seen a well pump that didn't ware out at a bad time the old windmill just keep working for free, plus I love to sit out with a cup of coffee and listen to it, it's calming Jim las vegas nv

There are a lot of things you can do to help keep heat in your camper and to keep water from freezing. First thing is to find a way to block the wind from going underneath of your camper. Plastic, natural materials, tables, fencing, etc would make soooo much of a difference especially for that little camper. I live in a little cabin and with my little heater and having some strategic wind/air leaks blocked I've stayed here down into multiple single digit temps for several weeks without issue. Perfectly comfortable not really but me and my dogs didn't freeze either. Good luck to you all!!

It sound like the small vertical wind turbines would work really well on your property. They are about 15% more efficient than the old styles of wind turbines. Something to think about for some heating and cooling is using solid corrugated drain pipe to make a system to take advantage of the Earth's 50 degree temp once you go down about 6 to 8 ft. (under the frost in the winter) One person uses this to heat his greenhouses in Utah. He put in around 8 120ft 6in pipes under the ground with a small box vent out in his yard where they come up. They form a U that comes up in the greenhouse with a fan attached to draw the air in. The air heats up to 50 degrees as it travels from the outside vent to the inside.

You’re probably done installing the diesel heater by now. But I’d suggest converting a dog house into the heater room. Then pipe the hot air duct into the scamp or your small office. Hope y’all can stay warm! We get really bad winds on the family land my camper is parked on because it’s mostly open farm land. I plan on moving my camper to a different part of the property, but once it’s in a more long term spot I want to anchor it down; even just a buried log with a rope wrapped around and attached to the camper. Many restless nights and saying constant prayers that I won’t flip over or have a tree fall on me. I wouldn’t recommend steep stairs. I grew up in an old house with very steep stairs and I fell down them multiple times. Then our friends rented them and multiple people fell down and had to get chiropractic adjustments afterwards, but luckily no broken bones. For me, I prefer really safe stairs with railings etc. you can still make it look cool. Maybe use wire and steel or something. Also, might as well consider the wind if it’s something you will constantly have and get a windmill.

Brings back memories...I lived in CO Springs outside of Peterson AFB when it was surrounded by cows and split rail fences. You all did not stack your stuff around the base of your trailer? Get some tarps if you are worried about ice glueing your things to the Scamp. Put some of the tarp on the ground with a portion to fold over the top of the items and in between the items and Scamp. That will help trap some of the heat at least keep some of the cold out.
