Hi! I grow banana trees in central Virginia. Several things I have found is first you don’t need to insulate the roots like you do. Mine survived this past winter down to 4 degrees above zero for two days and regular cold with no extra insulation. Secondly the tall stalks will have an internal shoot that will survive the cold if left alone provided it doesn’t get super cold for a long time. In the spring the outer layer will be dead but the inner sprout will emerge and give four or five feet of growth immediately. Thirdly as you said they need a lot of water to bear bananas. Initiate the flowering with gibberellin in the spring with an injection in the trunk to start immediate flowering. The bananas will then have time to mature before fall. Fourthly give them a dose of banana fertilizer frequently like 13/4/28. High in potassium. 9:21

Slight update. For the last 2 years I've let the debris pile stay for the summer, rather than clearing it after winter. It seems to help them stay hydrated during dry spells by trapping moisture, and it's less work!

You can make paper out of the banana leaves. you can make paper out of that .you have to soak it in the solution for 24 hours ,you drain the water ,you keep the fibers. Then you put it on a drying rack in your backyard, you dry for 24 to 48 hours, that becomes a paper fiber . if he interested I could send you the link. You have it right there you won't have to go to the store ever again to buy paper third world countries do this. Very interesting video I liked it.

Is this zone 7 in N.C.? In zone 8 bananas can produce fruit at least the small fast growing types it seems. In zone 7 they are more ornamental for looks than to produce fruit for eating.

I love this video Very educational. I’m in Northeast Tx some 8a/b. We get extreme col, extreme heat, extreme humidity, crazy winds(in tornado ally), etc. I do a lot of protection for overwintering. I’ve tried many different things. This route is one of my favorites. However all of the leaf matter and plant matter that was cut down I ALWAYS leave there to rot and be food for the plants the next coming years. If you keep the plant material you chopped down under there I could see your banana clump having close to 10 flowers some years. Peace N Love

Steam cook and Sauté the flowers with salt and garlic, tastes good. Only thing is you’ll have to remove the stamen from the individual flowers, else it’s hard to chew.

No. It took a few years. Once the rootball gets established they start to form a grove.

In the spring/ summer, use it as mulch in your garden instead of sitting it by the road for city collection.

How cold does it get there? I don't bother chopping mine down for winter anymore. I just mulch over the base. I lose about 4" in height by the spring but most of the stem survives. It gets to about -3 here during winter.

Your banana variety is probably Musa Basjoo, it is the most cold hardy variety of banana. I am in the mountains of Virginia (border zone 6) and mine come back reliably every year however I have not had mine grow as tall as yours, mine usually hit about 12 feet max. I'm also getting a lot of pups on mine and am removing them when they get large and planting them along the back of the property. I have never seen mine bloom but that is OK, I just like the great foliage they have and the WOW factor from people who see these :)

Why on earth would anyone ask you for advise on anything to do with bananas, when you can't even get them to mature. That's like asking a "mechanic" advice about a vehicle when their own car has a flat tire and they configure out why the vehicle is leaning.
