What I find most interesting is that with WipEout 2048, you can see in the track and environment design that the AGRL has just started out in the near-future; the racing line goes through parks and some genuinely recogniseable architecture types, punctuated with futuristic buildings as sign of the future. Cut to WipEout HD and you can see no classical buildings because it takes place 200 years into the future; the AGRL is so established now that tracks are 100% custom built.

Nothing will be more awesome that the first time i've played wipout on the PSX, first the demo that was with the console and then the game itself. The musicale tracks the circuits and the fury and speed of the races, it was especially exalirating at the time when you only had classical racing games and even so rarly any good ones on consoles at the time( Gran turismo came later irc) I wish i had the memory eraser from MIB just to play the first game like the first time again...

I found this channel through a Steam review by the user "SuperFrodo" commenting about a game called BallisticNG. It is apparently a VR-enabled faithful WipEout clone. When I clicked on this video and heard the classic techno at the beginning, I knew I had found something special. Can't wait to see the sights! The Wipeout series is one of my absolute favorites, alongside the F-Zero series. I wish the new Switch Wipeout game was more focused on blinding speed races than dodging obstacles. This would make it more faithful to the original IMO. Either way, I still have my Nintendo 64 so I'm not that worried ;)

It's gone very much up and down over the course of the whole series, and even then certain members in the community disagree over certain aspects. The high points have definitely been 2097 and 3SE. Pure also holds a special place for a lot of people as it practically resurrected the series. Fusion was the big low, especially with the massive shift in art style and completely different physics.

My Wipeout experience started with Wipeout on the PC, along with games like Mechwarror (god those were the days). Then I played Wip3out, one of my favourite games on the the PS1 and finally Wipeout HD Fury. I was hooked by its futuristic theme, extremely fast yet frustratingly difficult gameplay and last but not least sweet electronic soundtrack. If PS4 is launched with a Wipeout game as its launch title, I will almost certainly buy it.

Wipeout for ps1 was either you loved it or hated it, there was very little in between. The learning curve and being unforgiving is one of the things that made it great. You had to love it to get good at it. flawless runs took love for the game and putting your time in to do so. Linked was great as well on ps1. The style and music stand alone in any racing era of wipeout. if aliens had come to earth and made a racing game for us, that's what it would look and sound like. Great engine and vision.

Thank you for this video. I only got Wipeout2097 on PSX but it was too difficult, too dark and too techno-ish for me at the time but many years later, I started to listen to the soundtracks of the franchise, then Fluke became one of my favorite band of all-time, Wip3out never leaves my MP3 device and I fell in love with the design & future aspect of the game. I needed to play Wipeout games so hard, but I don't own any Playstation, so I'm currently playing 2097 with ePSXe. This game ROCKS !!

There's an amount of indie projects obviously inspired by WipEout, here are 2 Polish titles I know that are being developed: "Death Road" for PC and "Flashout 3D" for Android. But NOTHING will ever be comparable to WipEout. The 17-year tradition, teams, the quality, challenging speed along with enjoyable gameplay, design, music and overall climate - there will never be a game like that. Until new WipEout is out.

I remember when I were younger and got this game. I was disappointed because it kinda looked like something out of Star Wars Pod Race to me, and because I never played the first one at that time, seeing that some of the crafts had two or even three thrusters and the zone ship having four, let me down in the design aspect...at first. The game was amazing.
@dhoffnun

Yeah... that one stands out to me like some kind of un-wanted step-relative. The physics were awful and the ship designs were goofy in comparison to all the other games... but at least it did run smoothly. The thing that really killed that one for me was it never felt like you were piloting a hovering vehicle - they all felt glued to the track at an exact height, rather than moving through the air.
@ArcienPlaysGames

David Hoffnung Fucking this! Hard to maneuver as well (Most of them. Late game crafts and Feisar and Uber was just fine), at least in comparison to the old, and even the never games. Not to mention the countless glitches, where you randomly go through the walls or bounce off of the track, just to name a few. Oh and the track design in most levels as well...fucking infuriating with the pillars and those (AAARGH) doors on Temtesh Bay and the cave on Cubiss Float. But despite this, there was something about it I loved to death. Now, I'm not sure what it was.

The grid system in Pulse is only an issue for the first couple of weeks you have the game when you're still beating the campaign. The rest of the time, you select your class/mode/track/ship directly in Racebox (still oddly missing in 2048). Kind of an odd thing to complain about. Pulse is smoother and faster than Pure was, too.
