Excellent review! I was unsure about reading the book at first, but after your review, I think I'll find it valuable.

I really appreciated your take on this book. It's been a go-to for me as I've been working on videos for a while (mostly helping others and analyzing videos) and every now and then I'll look for anyone with a fresh take on the book. I honestly don't know why I haven't done my own take on the book. I do have a script in the work to break down why a certain older 80/90s era 'classic' movie is so good a story and how it hits also every beat from Lisa's book. I think Pixar unknowingly uses at least 3/4 of her template too. I've created my own google doc template that looks like this: Storytelling outline to use from “Wired for Story” book tactics: What’s the hook? How to zero in on your point: Can we empathize with the protagonist? What does your protagonist want? Digging up your protagonist's inner issue The story is in the specifics Courting conflict, the agent of change Cause and effect What can go wrong MUST go wrong The road from setup to payoff Meanwhile, back at the ranch

It doesn't TRULY work as an outline as some of these are just things you have to keep in mind throughout your writing like the "cause and effect" or "courting conflict", etc.. But it helps me to list them out to make sure I'm hitting some key tactics or spur on some creativity when I'm stuck and not sure where to go next.

@@jmckey Thanks for commenting James! I like your take on the book as well. There are a lot of great takeaways when it comes to storytelling and I did appreciate all the nuggets I found.

I really like your review of writers' craft books. I have listed the five books and plan to buy some of them. I need something to kick-start me on writing a novel that I have been thinking about for ages.

@@Katlyn_Duncan I have placed an order for two of the five craft books that you have reviewed. My local bookshop said that it will take about three weeks before I will have the books.

I skipped a lot of the examples lol. I also enjoy the little nuggets, & that character profile part was nice cuz I hate the usual lengthy ones too. I made a video on it & a few others too :) liked your thoughts!

Yeah, I more skim read this book but I admit I felt guilty for it. The science of the brain stuff was very appealing and I sort of developed my own evolution theory/story around it. Imagine kids around a fireplace being told about their grandma who got stuck in the tar pit. She was trying to get some fur and meat off of the wooly mammoth that was also stuck in the tarpit but then grandma, she TOO got stuck in the tarpit and now you won't ever see grandma again. So don't go near the tarpit! Those kids who could "feel" the emotion of grandma getting stuck in the tarpit didn't go near it and survived to have more kids. Those who didn't died in the tarpit before having kids. Simple evolution pattern. Those who can learn from sensible stories might do better in life and live to have their own kids or in a modern context be more successful/be more happy.

Sorry you were disappointed! It's not actually a science textbook, but it's interesting how she's researched brain science to understand how we read.

If I recall correctly she references existing scientific work. You can do so and still have relevant/useful literature. It's not only scientists that can write about science. In fact, scientists are often some of the WORST story tellers and suck at getting their own word out and NEED that help from people who get how to make it sound more interesting. Example: some of the best NASA promo videos out there were NOT made by NASA or any scientific agency but just by fans who love science and NASA.

Hi Katlyn, I’ve been following you for some time but don’t think I’ve commented before - I was wondering if you had time to answer a question about ghostwriting? I’ve recently been offered a ghostwriting job but there’s something in the contract I find iffy, and I don’t know any other pro ghostwriters. If you had the time to tell me if this one clause is normal in your experience I would be so so grateful - but of course absolutely no pressure if you’re unable to, I know I’m asking a huge favor. Please let me know how best to contact you if so, thanks :)
