Living Proof and Helpless from the forthcoming album Just Testing live Year of the Child Concert 22.11.1979. I am not claiming any rights, publishing or otherwise on this video.
What a fantastic drummer, Steve Upton. I think it is exactly the kind of drumming that was for this kind of music.

Wishbone Ash - the finest purveyor of harmony guitar playing in rock history. Yes, I'm aware of Thin Lizzy (of which I was a big fan also) and Allman Brothers. Their (W.Ash) melodic guitar playing is very hard to top.

Robin Trower said the same thing about Laurie Christine, he was in a band called Home before Ash, they had 3 albums. Cliff Williams from ACDC was the bass player.

Wishbone Ash were the only band to play live at this gig - the rest of the gig was mimed !! - Gary Numan used his Hammersmith Odeon gig from a few weeks earlier and the crowd at Wembley didn't realise what was going on !!

I was there! Also on the bill that night were Gary Numan, The Real Thing, David Essex and Cat Stevens. Gary Numan and David Essex sung live but their music was on a backing tape believe it or not. Wishbone Ash were great and fully live as you can see and hear from this video.

First heard of WA in 1975, so MK 2 is "my" original Wishbone Ash. Went to several dozens of their concerts throughout the years, last time I saw them was in 2017. I must confess, they are boring me today, sorry, I can't help. But seeing this video brings back to me why MK2 is THE rock band of my life ! And Laurie is MY guitarero of all times ! Even Andy is in a "slightly better shape " :-))

No worries WT. Wish I was there. I saw this lineup March 1975 in Auckland at Western Springs Stadium when Upton was arrested..great way to send an album to No3 in the charts. It was the last date of a tour and there were several cream pies thrown by the crew.

@stevesut2566

@@FlyingVie Didn't I reply? sorry if that was the case. The Auckland Mayor got a call from an old woman friend living near the Stadium complaining about swearing. Steve Upton had introduced the song FUBB as what it stands for and the Police were waiting backstage for him. He was fined 30 pounds UK. Steve first said "Smells nice out there on the grass!" Everyone laughed, the audience were shouting out his name when he walked across to the microphone. People were very focused on music back then, groups had their own identity. The sound quality at the concert was amazing.

Nice one fellow Kiwi. I emigrated NZ in 1987 as NZ had so little Classic Rock gigs to go to, and we they did, you would normally have to travel the length of the country for a one off gig in Auckland as I did for Status Quo in 1976. I was fortunate that I had only hooked onto the Ash in the early to mid 80s when I got their debut album from a 2nd hand shop, and quickly started to get the rest. I was also lucky that I got to see the original line up when they reformed for a 1988 Hammersmith Odeon show (A 10 minute walk from where I was living in Earls Court). I got to see W Ash many times over the following 5 years in really small venues like the Borderline, Marquee etc. I also saw Ted and Andy at the Night of the Guitars and a couple of years later I got to see Lawrie Wisefield at the second Night of the Guitars Tour. Its just such a shame with all the bitching between Andy and Martin. The English version of Grank Funk. Lifes too short. People want to see the Classic line ups these days and not tribute bands.

Paul I was at the Borderline to, in 1989 and saw the original line up play. I was right in front of Ted Turner. I was also at Quo in 1976 at Carlaw Park in Auckland. I emigrated to Sydney late 1980, about a week after seeing Thin Lizzy. You are so right there wasn't a lot of great classic rock tours down under then.

@stevesut2566 I actually recorded the Borderline show and the others on a Sony Pro walkman. Must upload sometime. Yeah, my first 2 BIG gigs were Lou Reed and Suzi Quatro Wellington Town Hall 74. Think Suzi was first, but there is NOTHING documented on Google at all about this gig. The Lou Reed gig was brilliant, and not the show that was regarded as second worst NZ concert ever (Oasis first). I got to see Stevie Ray twice, George Thorogood, Uriah Heep, Cheap Trick, Motorhead, Dr Feelgood, Chuck Berry,Donovan and maybe a handful more, but when I got to London, it was top notch gigs every night. Bands like Groundhops, Chicken Shack,Man etc all in walking distance in pubs that were sometimes free. As to the big names.... In the first year alone I got tobsee ALL the essential Metal, Classic Rock bands like Priest, Krokus,Scorpions,Aerosmith, B.O.C., Def Leppard,Donington etc etc. I actually got to see Quo again the month I arrived at the last REAL Reading fest in 87 that also had Aluce Cooper, Bad News, Georgia Satellites, Stranglers etc. Sadly, the new Quo was a shadow of the Frantic 4. By the way, you MUST have seen the Gizago TV special of Quo on TV before they played Carlaw Park. They played at least 4 songs incl Mystery Song promo plus Don't waste my time and Paper Plane from Marquee 72. However, they also played Roadhouse Blues from the Marquee show. I have never come across anyone who can witness that song. I remember it vividly and was tripping badly (so to speak). Can you remember? An Irish guy saw on TV Quo playing Bye Bye Johnny from Marquee. I really need to see these 2 songs. Look on You Tube for Midnight Special Big Fat Mama. That was a nice unexted surprise. Kia Kaha bro. Go the All Blacks

@@groovedohg Yeah Paul, love the Frantic 4. I have seen a lot of the same groups as you. Saw Uriah Heep at Western Springs Stadium late 1974 with Gary Thain still there. Love Dr. Feelgood seen them many times. Did you ever see Alex Harvey?

@stevesut2566 No. Never saw SAHB. However I was fortunate enough to latch on to Porcupine Tree, Riverside and most especially Kings X from the very start. Their Marquee gig London 1988 is by far the most satisfying gig of my life. How they didn't become household names, especially after Woodstock 1994, is one of Rocks biggest mysterys.

@stevesut2566 I actually misses the 74 Heep. Saw them on the Goalby tour in Wellington. I uploaded the Logan Campbell gig on my YT. I actually was going to see Quo at the Dominion Theatre in Wgtn 1974 but it was cancelled. That would have been mindblowing. Not sure, but I think they did do a festival with Sabbath up North which was a complete mud bath. Strange how Quo never returned to NZ after Carlaw Park until just a couple of years ago, and yet again it was an Auckland only show.

This is great! Thanks! As you can hear the guitar amps are not hi gain as later in the 80 90s, these guys played lower gain amps that craved a lot more from the guitar players themselves; using their fingers to get sustain.

Yes I remember There's the Rub producer Bill Szymczyk being impressed with their guitar tones in 1974 and taking it to The Eagles for the One of these nights sessions late '74 and Early '75.
