The past few months have delivered some truly heartbreaking climate change news. Looking back on a lifetime spent fighting to protect our ocean, Julie Packard, our executive director here at Monterey Bay Aquarium, encourages us all to channel those feelings into courage to address climate change head-on.
Recently, major scientific reports-from the state of California (www.climateasse..., the United Nations (www.ipcc.ch/sr15/) and the recent National Climate Assessment (nca2018.global... confirm that extreme weather events, like the devastating wildfires here in California and the hurricanes in Florida and the Carolinas, are getting worse as a result of man-made carbon pollution.
In these trying times, it’s easy to become overwhelmed, or scared, or angry. And those feelings can be channeled into courage to move forward in these challenging times and make the changes we need. There are examples of courageous work being done all around, and more every day.
Last month, more than 115 million Americans cast their ballots-the highest voter turnout of any midterm election in a century (www.bbc.com/ne... elected almost a dozen new governors who courageously campaigned on making climate change a priority (mbayaq.co/2QwI... to cut carbon pollution and invest in renewable energy. Here in Monterey Bay, we banded together to create a community power agency that is supplying all of our electricity from renewable sources (www.mbcommunit....
In your workplace, your neighborhood, your community, you have the influence to make an impact. You don’t have to go it alone-there are organizations taking the kind of actions you want to see, and your help goes a long way. Together, we can prepare our communities for the impacts of climate change already underway, and make sure the worst scenarios never come to pass.
We hope you’ll join the Aquarium as we move forward in these challenging times to protect our blue planet and all of the life-people and animals-who call it home, and face what the future holds with courage. Thanks for watching the video, and for reading this far in the description. Let’s go save us some ocean.
