With Maturity Comes Growth...
I feel joy when l watch a bumble bee dance from flower to flower, greedily tucking into it's healthy dinner enabling it to grow and hopefully flourish...
That feeling grows when l have designed the plant into the garden, selected it from the assortment at the plant nursery and carefully placed in it the ground with a splash of water...
When l started designing and landscaping gardens my main interest was the hard landscaping elements; the terraces, feature walls, structures and kitchens. I devoted little thought to the soft landscaping elements of planting; it was included but minimised.
I admit some of this was though fear; a lack of knowledge of what plants l could use. In the 1960s, gardener Beth Chatto popularised the concept of 'right plant, right place'. This is the idea that if you give a plant the right growing conditions, it will reward you. Over the years, l have learn't from the successes and failures that this is very true and l continue to learn those lessons.
I have also learned to appreciate the incredible impact of a garden with ample planting. It visually softens the landscaping, enriches the colour palette and creates movement,
A plant grows, flourishes and matures helping to fill out the borders, enriching the vista and feeds our hungry Bumble Bees.
As l have matured, l actively embrace adding more planting into the gardens l design... that's growth!
