Well let’s see, Before I went to college to get a more lucrative job, I maintained a fur handler’s license for 3 consecutive years, during which, I ran long lines and shipped fur to the North American Fur Auction. I looked forward to receiving a check from them each following summer. For many years preceding those “hard core” years I enjoyed trapping and selling my more modest caches of fur, green, to a local fur handler. Some of my favorite trapping authors are Stanley Hawbaker, Bob Gilsvik, and Hal Sullivan. When I was 23 I lost the tip of my left thumb when my Necker knife slipped while fleshing a very grisly coon (due to being saturated with the grease of the dozens of coons that preceded that one that day. I don’t run long lines anymore but I still have all my traps and equipment. I will always be glad for all the trapping knowledge and experience I have and don’t hesitate to use it when I need to deal with coyotes eating my deer or beavers clogging up a culvert. I have attended multiple NTA trapper’s conventions and enjoyed the camaraderie with other trappers. I know how hard it is to get the smell of beaver caster off your fingers, and I know to hold my breath a full 30 seconds AFTER closing up the Powder River coyote lure. My mother has a beaver coat from beavers I caught and shipped to USA Fox Fur which required 10 blanket beavers to be made into a coat for her. I’m proud of every coyote, fox, bobcat, beaver, otter, nutria, coon, and skunk I ever caught. (Can’t say I ever got too excited about all the possums). Brother…I AM a trapper. And I always will be. I support trapping 100%. And I’m gonna admit something to you now…I used to be one of those guys that set 220’s and 330’s on land. But I’m not anymore. The Lord teaches us to do unto others as we would have them do unto us. I know how much I’ve loved all the good dogs I’ve had and I’d be heartbroken if one of them ended up in a conibear. YES, it’s true, you can catch lots of coon, otter, and even bobcat setting conibears in runs a few feet up the bank of creek/ditch. But a well educated trapper knows dang well there’s other ways that don’t run the risk of PERMANENTLY ending the life of somebody’s dog. Coon cuff’s and Griz type traps work perfectly fine for the coons in those same areas. The otters working those runs will get caught just as good where those runs enter the water. And as for the bobcats, you can catch them just fine with a dirt hole set and a number 2 Victor wherever they roam. Let me leave you with one last thought. If you have never been on a traditional rabbit hunt with a swarm of beagles…DO IT. You will have a blast and the experience of a lifetime. But between now and (hopefully) whenever you get to do it, I need you to picture those good little dogs doing what they do. They run, romp, belly crawl, jump and anything else they have to, to follow the scent of those rabbits. They press through briars you and I wouldn’t dream of of trying to get through all because they love it so much. Now I want you to picture one of those little guys nosing his way right into a conibear. It’s just not ok. Hunting dogs will always be out and about in the same woods and water that we trap. Private land, public land, and even some no man’s border easement. Like it or not, they will eventually end up where you have been. If you have any heart and any sense of right and wrong, you will give this some consideration. I wish you a huge catch of fur in the coming season, and I hope for you even more that you will consider these moral obligations that we as trappers should all consider. -SLMC 🔥

Rabbit hunting with beagles, coon hunting with hounds, squirrel hunting with cur and feist. These are only a few of some very legitimate practices that involve using dogs out in the country and off the leash, in the same woods, public and private, where we set our traps. There’s nothing irresponsible about it. And these pastimes are backed by quite a few sportsmen that have a lot of say in state hunting/fishing/trapping regulations. If decency and a moral compass aren’t enough to keep your Conibears in the water, you may want to do so in the interest of the future of trapping. -Stagger

Am i right if i assume that this will only kill the animal if it gets hit on the neck/head? Or is this actually strong enough to do sufficient damage anywhere else (i hope whatever gets in will not have to drown with a broken spine).

I had a nice little paragraph in my head, ready to type up, but it turns out, I just couldn’t have said it any better than Wikipedia: The nutria or coypu (Myocastor coypus)[1][2] is a large, herbivorous,[3] semiaquatic rodent from South America. Classified for a long time as the only member of the family Myocastoridae,[4] Myocastor is now included within Echimyidae, the family of the spiny rats.[5][6][7] The nutria lives in burrows alongside stretches of water and feeds on river plant stems.[8] Originally native to subtropical and temperate South America, it has since been introduced to North America, Europe and Asia, primarily by fur farmers.[9] Although it is still hunted and trapped for its fur in some regions, its destructive burrowing and feeding habits often bring it into conflict with humans, and it is considered an invasive species in the United States.[10] Nutria also transmit various diseases to humans and animals, mainly through water contamination.[11] -Wikipedia

I’m afraid you missed that indeed very funny scene by about 25 years. It was the one and only time I was ever snapped by a Conibear and a hard lesson learned. I had been setting traps for months without incident, but that day I learned that a newly dipped trap (“Speed Dip”) becomes slicker than 🦉 💩 and is extremely easy to spring accidentally. Additionally on Duke traps, that have a “7” shaped spring safety rather than the candy cane shape of superior brands, the new dip can simultaneously cause them to fail. Solution: always use a safety gripper. …especially on newly dipped traps. -Stagger
