I lived there from 87/88. Pub was a focal point in a town of 45. Bought a few burgers from Doc Holidays. Played cricket on the gravel oval. Gorges & pools were great to look at & swim in. In summer, avg temp was around 48C. Couldnt take a shower during the day as the cold water was too hot to stand under. Had to wait for evening when temp dropped. Dealt with Lang Hancock & co. The airport is overgrown & hard to distinguish, like the old pub, now gone. Lots of interesting times, people & events.

Nice clip mate. Wittenoom has a fascinating, yet very sad story. My old man used to work on mining trains up that way in the early 80's, between Newman and Port Hedland. He spent some time in Wittenoom when it was still a going concern, despite the asbestos mine in the gorge being closed back in 1966. The pub was still open in 1995, and they only cut the power and phone lines in 2006. Can you remember what the sign at 5:50 says? I can't make it out on my monitor! Cheers!

I used to live in Newman. We used to go out to Wittenoom and had a big chunk of the blue asbestos on a shelf for ages, before we really knew how dangerous it was. My sister was born in Newman and we have a trip planned back there in October. How bad is the road into Wittenoom? Might take a drive through it.
@pmk3australia

Yes. We all did things years back before we knew it would harm us. My dad was a sparky & used to keep asbestos matting in the workshop. He would use it behind switchboards as fire proof insulation The road in from Auski Roadhouse is bitumen for half the way & then good gravel From memory it is about 40km overall Although I think the remaining buildings in Wittenoom have been demolished now Cheers Paul

To all travellers please don't go into old now abandoned town site blue asbestos mining town of Wittenoom w.a and my father was a deputy shire president for the shire of Ashburton and late premier Ernie Bridge declared the town closed down from abandoned asbestos industry in Wittenoom and killed 2000 mine workers and townsite
@pmk3australia

I guess that's up to them. It's a very sad history but people are curious & want to see it for themselves. The townsite has been levelled now so not much to see there I think you won't stop people from wanting to have a look at the gorge All the areas around there are also asbestos warnings. In Karijini & Hammersley but these areas are a huge attraction to people And you won't stop them from visiting these places Cheers, Paul

@@pmk3australia I know, I’m making a point that it reminds me of Chernobyl only the problem is asbestos instead of radiation

Yeah I Get that... Funny comparison. Chernobyl was a city where as Wittenoom was a relatively small town So size wise Chernobyl was a bigger disaster. Although Wittenoom residents might not agree as the town is now abandoned & many of the people there died of cancer related problems brought on by working & living in this town over a long time. To them & their families it was a big deal.
