Presentation of the conference: Ludwig Wittgenstein's biography is full of strange and disturbing anecdotes, but his name remains above all attached to that of a rather enigmatic work: the Tractatus. This philosophy book deals with language, logic and ethics. His problem will always be the same throughout his work, certainly in a different way each time: that of correct expression, and not of truth. In other words, how do we say what we have to say? What are the limits of what can be said and how to draw a line in language between what makes sense and what doesn't? Should we not agree that only silence is ultimately the only correct expression of the meaning of the world? In this sense, the scale is indeed the Wittgensteinian object par excellence, the symbol of its rejection and its overcoming of metaphysics: the reader of the Tractatus must "so to speak throw the scale after having climbed it", get rid of this indispensable but cumbersome tool in order to reach a floor from where one can "correctly see the world".
Quotes from Wittgenstein:
- "Ethics, if it exists, is supernatural, whereas our words only mean facts; like a tea cup that will never contain more than the value of a cup, even if I pour a liter of water into it. " (Ethics Conference)
- "I am sitting with a philosopher in the garden; he says repeatedly: ˝Je know that this is a tree. ˝, while pointing to a tree near us. A third person arrives and hears this, and I tell him: ˝Non, this man is not crazy. We do philosophy. ˝. " (From certainty, 467)
- "My proposals are clarifications in that the one who understands me recognizes them at the end as meaningless, when by their means -- by passing over them -- he has overcome them. (He must, so to speak, throw the ladder away after climbing it.) He must go beyond these proposals to see the world correctly. " (Tractatus logico-philosophicus, 6.54)
- "On what we cannot talk about, we must remain silent. " (Tractatus logico-philosophicus, 7)
