Getting out of jury duty doesn't require scheming, lying, or a special trick. Both lawyers are looking for two things: A) biases against their side of the case, and B) jurors who are *easily led*. So all you need to do to get voted off jury island is to answer their questions honestly, *and fully*. The more you talk, the more outspoken you can be, the more one of the two lawyers will realize that having you on in the group is bad for their case. Both can only kick off so many jurors, so they need a reason to get rid of you, so if you keep talking, they'll find one.
@SteveS86

The trick to getting out of jury duty is to be long winded, got it. Thanks person who definitely doesn’t have firsthand knowledge on this subject.
@electronsympathy
10 ай бұрын
@@SteveS86 That literally is my firsthand knowledge. Lawyers are looking for jurors that are good for their case, and they have a number of rejections they can use if they feel that the juror is bad for their case. You don't have to ramble on or anything, but if you can get into the groove of it instead of just giving passive yes and no answers, they have more reasons to like or dislike you as a juror. If you're seen as good for one lawyer, you're *by default* bad for the other, and they're going to use a removal on you to ensure that the other lawyer doesn't have an edge.

Seriously though, here is how to get out of jury duty, without doing anything they could charge you for. I hate it because I am in law enforcement. If I was just a salty ass construction worker or something, I would just go in smelling like whiskey and tell them I drink 24/7, but they could surely get me for something, or call my work. So, what to do is when they ask you if there's anything about you that maybe you shouldn't be on the jury, tell them that you know about jury nullification, and whatever the guy is being accused of, you think that crime is bs, and it should not be illegal. If he is up on drug charges, say you believe drug laws are unjust, and anybody should be able to put whatever substance in their body that they see fit. They will usher you out of there so fast, praying to god that the others don't pick up the strategy. Jury nullification is when although you think the person did in fact do the deed, you think the law is unjust so you vote not guilty anyways. Judges HATE it, and do not want you to know about it.

The courthouse often says 'the typical jury time is 3days'. To which I tell them my sister served for over 3 months. Anything longer than a day could hurt me financially. They don't understand that clients of contract gigs will move the services to another vendor. I can still work at the agency but if the services are transferred, there's no gig, there's no work for me, there's no $$. Our client doesn't have to guarantee employment if I get called for jury duty, it's only my agency that has to do that. I could still remain "employed" but I won't be able to bill hours for a non-existent client. I usually have to tell them I'll lose my means to an income which will not put me in any sort of mood or headspace to make rational decisions. They let me go at that point. I would love to do my civil duty but our society doesn't facilitate it. $20 a day isn't jack.

Since everyone is talking about Jury Nullification in this comment section here is what it really means. Jury nullification is a quirk of the fact that in a jury trial the judge is what is called the "Finder of Law" and the jury is the "Finder of Fact" in short what this means is that the jury decides, presumably based on the evidence, what the facts of the situation actually were and reaches a verdict based on their factual findings and the findings of law the judge has laid out for them. This is why jury instructions include step by step explanation of what the jury must "find" to be true in order to convict on a particular charge. So what Jury nullification really means is that the Jury has been entrusted to find facts and it is their sole discretion to do so, and they can go rogue ....if they really wanted to. Now the judge will make legal determinations about what issues of fact are in question based on the evidence and so some facts might not be up to the jury, but at least some critical elements of the crime will be. So as a jury you can believe one thing about the guilt or innocence of the defendant and still return a verdict that represents a finding of fact in opposition to that sincerely held belief. Common EXAMPLES of jury nullification can include things most people would consider positive OR things that people would consider extremely negative. For example: 1) Some might think that acquitting a father who beat a man to death for molesting his child is justice and return a NOT GUILTY verdict even though they sincerely believe he did it. 2) Juries in the south during the dark and ugly days of racism would return a GUILTY verdict for a black person simply because of his skin color. This is why courts do not like jury nullification, because jurors are supposed to follow the law by design, but in practice there is very little that can realistically be done to enforce this and they are responsible for administering fair and equal justice to all who come into their court. Jury nullification is pretty much by definition unequal justice, but some legal scholars do say it was intentionally allowed in our legal system as a way for the populace to correct when courts and/or laws are out of touch with the common man (these arguments are usually in support of the father who murders a child molestor type of situation). Prohibition and Fugitive slave laws are good examples of what those arguments are referring to as well. When prosecutors and judges hold trials and prove that people sold/consumed alcohol or that someone is legitimately a fugitive slave, but a jury refuses to return a verdict in accordance with the law it would have the effect of nullifying the law and in many jurisdictions they simply stopped bringing those cases because it was a waste of time. But as I pointed out before it also had a dark side in how it can be used to convict innocent people who are part of a disfavored group in society. So it is a double-edged sword. Regardless, you should also keep in mind some judges REALLY do not like jury nullification even being mentioned in their court and doing so may illicit unpredictable responses. I strongly suggest going with something more like "The police arrested him, he must be guilty!" or some variant thereof fitting to the situation if you want to get out of it. But I also think most people who engage in jury duty will find the whole thing educational and enlightening. Still many simply cannot afford the lost time/wages/etc.. and for those people just firmly but politely pointing out what a hardship it would be for you is probably the way to go.

I always tell them I believe the police always tell the truth, that I believe in capital punishment, and that all drugs should be legalized. Never got picked once. However, here in South Florida. It's really easy. The bailiff comes in and asks if anybody doesn't speak English well enough to serve and two-thirds of everybody gets up and leaves. The rest of us sit on hard wooden chairs and watch a recorded video of Vern saves Christmas on a continuous loop. The most fun I ever had at court as a potential juror was one day at lunch time I was sitting out front of the downtown Miami courthouse on top of the wall and a security guard came out started screaming at me to get down. About 20 minutes later a very large dog with a purple tongue that was foaming at the mouth went to the door of the courthouse and scratched on the glass door wanting to go in.
