For lowering current, i would use the WS2815 strips. 12V, individually addressable, and it brings the current down to about 1/3. They also allow for an LED to 'die' and the rest of the strip will still function. Also, there is no significant voltage drop along 5m strips, so you don't get color changes, like you do on long runs of 5V strips. So if you are doing longer runs, you cut down on current, and you need less power injection points. There is a higher idle current draw than other strips though. but i personally don't care about that, but it's something to consider.

I am thinking to divide the path on sections and install every 18-24 inches a PIR and when someone steps on that section the pir would trigger the LED, stepping on the next section, next pir would be triggered on so on. I would strongly advise against undersizing your power supply based on expectation of never using full brightness. Pushing a cheap power brick to its thermal limit is not where you want to be. All it takes is an automation error or someone not aware of your assumption and you increase risk of a fire. Also 18A is a lot for most cables, connectors, circuit tracks - they’ll get hot! Take care!

@@DRacer90 that is up to you. Find out the max total current per led at full brightness, multiply by the number of LEDs. Then I would suggest add 20% to get a safe power supply current rating. If it’s more than 10A, you need to be very careful that you don’t exceed the current rating of your wire and connections, particularly leading up to the first part of the strip.
@nestomagic
2 жыл бұрын
@@Thompsonnumber4 actually the wled app can limit how much current it can use at its maximum so there is no fire risk at all. Just set it 20% lower than the max current your power supply supports and thats it. It may not be at its brightest but that isn't a problem to most.

I'm interested in possibly covering an entire full-size arcade cabinet with programmable LEDs, so I can control and change its appearance. Ideally, I'd like to program it to display sprites from games, but I suspect programmable LEDs are yet to support that high a resolution. Or, at least, readily available ones. Govee's app allows you to address each led with a visual representation on the app of each light string. Is there anything like that with WLED? I bought of bunch of string lights and they have silly drawings that can scroll around. I want to use this to make a specific lights blink on and off. Their app worked great for that, but required you to connect the phone each time you turned it on to load the pattern. The prop I will be making needs to be portable and will have the power turn on and off often. Is there an option that will save your pattern and automatically start back up with it the next time it's turned on?
@makeitworktech

There is "Peek" mode that allows you to see a visual representation of the light strip. There is also a way to break up the strip into segments, and control those individually. WLED will start back up with the same pattern it was turned off, but if power is completely disconnected it won't start back up that way. However, you can save presets so that you can quickly apply these effects after power is re-supplied.

The one I linked isn't the HomeKit version (not when I click the link anyway), but the two are very similar. The LS-4P is the WLED version and will work with HA, but the LS-5P is the HomeKit version and I have never tested it

No, that adapter can easily handle 3A. I don't remember where I got the adapter, but you can find them on Amazon. Govee is popular because it is really easy to use (just plug and play), and the app can coordinate different light strip with ease. And I cannot get out of Govee because of Dream View. But I agree Govee strip is really low quality (30led/M), so a lot of visible hot spot. They have a newer ones with 60Led/M, but super expensive.

I wanted to follow along in your video, I bought the Athom LS-5P. When I plugged in the same power supply to the LED Strip controller, pressed the on button - nothing happened. No wireless access point came up on either my phone or pc. Checking the MY Networks on the phone I linked to homekit_0b816a. It's an Unsecured Network, no security which exposes my network traffic to anyone. A bit concerning. There's no WLED name in the Wi-Fi networks at all. Not being a Network person, I spent most of the afternoon trying to work this out. I don't see any WLED interface at all. Any guesses what's going on? Thanks.

Yeah, the LS-5P is the HomeKit version, the LS-4P is the WLED version. You've got the wrong version, that's why no WLED AP is showing up. Amazon isn't selling the WLED version, so it's easiest to buy from the Athom website

Would it be possible to connect and control two separate LED strips to this controller? I would like to connect two separate strips and have them both output the same color/effect/preset through WLED. Would it just be as simple as inserting both leads from each strip into the screw terminals on the controller?

I believe so, but of course the amount of power would be different, so the internal current limiter might not work properly. Might be easier to get a DigQuad from Dr. Zzs/Quindor and then Sync the strips via WLED

If I plug a 5v power supply into the 12v female connector (two wire one you mention at 6:52) is it not going to fry it?
@makeitworktech

If you're referring to the 2-wire DC adapter, no, the only thing that would fry it is too much current. So 12 or 5v is no issue. I'm guessing you're talking about this? amzn.to/3X0WDdI

If you solder strips together, you need to set the correct number of LEDs as I've shown in the video. You will probably need to inject power periodically because there is voltage drop along the strip.
