Nice work, that grease was like water! What I do on my RC's that have some kind of casing like that around the spur gear I go around every edge with a tacky thick grease and also around the cover and when you screw it together it makes a grease gasket seal.. I do this to all gearboxes and axle housings it works like a charm.

Just to confirm, the 12402-A does have plastic gears inside the differentials. Even the one that I just bought and received last week. I just did this exact same service to mine last night. It's good to know that the diffs in the 104009 look like the same diffs as the 104001. I wasn't finding any metal upgrade diffs specifically for the 12402-A. Thank you, Dave!

Yes using thread lock is always a good idea on the wheel nuts, use the blue loctite though not the red so you can remove the but when needed. Also I just use Castrol high temp bearing grease in all my RC’s car and truck diffs, haven’t had any issues what so ever. Thanks for watching Marc 👍

Hey man. I'm very new to RC cars. Not much of a tinkerer. Just received 124016 and damn is it quick. Was enjoying 104009, until the chassis snapped at the front and the metal rod popped out (central rod of some kind). Is it worth trying to fix ? Couldn't find a metal chassis upgrade. Maybe they don't make em for this model ? And suggestions much appreciated :) 🤙

The issue of dirt and sand getting into the pinion/spur gear box reminds me of the Traxxas MAXX, it has that exact same issue. There's probably a small gap somewhere, once you identify where you can fix it easily enough using RTV silicone.
