Feel free to skip around! I put a timestamp guide down below if you don't want to read this
I was definitely not the first to film this, but I think was still able to catch some pretty interesting stuff before EDCO’s contract officially started. This was filmed across three days in the final week of December; right up to WM’s very last day in El Cajon. Most of these trucks will be in their own video in the future. I heard that no drivers will be laid off as a result of the loss of this contract. Only 2-3 WM drivers left for EDCO. Those who stayed will be assigned to shortened routes elsewhere in San Diego County.
In the three days I spent there, I saw that WM was consistently behind on their residential routes by as much as a day, sometimes more. There are multiple reasons for this; 1) Trash is always heavy after Christmas, 2) San Diego County recently reinstated a stay-at-home order, and 3) WM was very short staffed due to drivers calling in sick. In that final week EDCO had sent out an army of their brand new Autocar New Way trucks to do dry runs of the city’s residential and commercial routes. When I was driving around I saw about 2 EDCO trucks for every 1 WM truck.
As you'll see, EDCO rolled out brand new Toter EVR II carts and plastic Wastequip dumpsters in nearly every corner of the city. I can understand replacing the aging and heavy metal dumpsters, but the new carts seem like a waste of taxpayer dollars, definitely a mistake on the city's part imo. Not to mention the environmental impact of needlessly collecting and destroying perfectly good carts and distributing new ones.

0:00 WM trucks coming and going from the yard
0:55 EDCO trucks scouting out routes
1:35 Pete 320 Amrep Hardox ASL on Recycle - This shows why the EVRIIs are inferior carts. When placed close together, they get knocked over way more easily than the old WM carts.
4:16 Pete 320 Amrep Hardox ASL on Trash - This driver and I had a good chat. Sergio has been with WM for 28 years, since the USA Waste days. He was the one who told me that WM would be shortening routes and sending all the El Cajon drivers to other cities. Not surprisingly, he has been pulling serious overtime lately, sometimes up to 80 hours. I got a nice long video of him working into the dark of the night. Serious respect to him for putting in a lifetime of service to the city.
Wednesday 12/30/20
6:17 Mack LE Wittke Crocodile ASL Collecting Trash - One of 2 Crocodiles left. This one was out making up the Tuesday route on a Wednesday. The driver was greeted by a mob of irate residents who were told by WM that their trash would be picked up on Sunday. This driver was pretty cool so I got a decently long video.
Thursday 12/31/20
8:05 Pete 320 Amrep Hardox FL Collecting Trash - I found this dude at a 7/11 and got a couple of clips. Shout out to the Syrian food place with the 6 yard bin, I got lunch there and it was excellent.
9:45 Autocar ACX Amrep ASL Collecting Trash - The best ASL I filmed all week. Driver was a pro. I got a medium amount of video, but looking back I wish I got a little more.
11:13 Mack MR Wittke tall body FL Collecting Trash - The star of the show. The driver was sketched out by me following him at first, but once I explained myself it was all good. I got a solid video of him in an apartment complex.
12:40 Autocar ACX Amrep FL Collecting Recycle - This truck crossed paths with EDCO's dumpster rollout crew. I wanted to get some more video but he was in a pretty sketchy apartment complex so I called it a day and left. Not sure what they were saying but it was neat to see employees of the two rival haulers laughing and joking together.
Thanks to everyone at Waste Management and EDCO for being cool with me! I didn't get told not to record once in the whole week, which is unheard of.
