weapon a part, Ton Puey is the real rapier OG here in Spain. You were dancing with maybe the best one. His footwork is perfect and keeps the center like a dragonfly.

I was going to say, he’s doing very well on defense. I personally don’t like rapiers. I prefer longsword and messer or arming sword. More messer, I think.

I know there is once again a small chance you will see this Damon, and I have commented my before about how passionate I am learning the way my ancestors fought. But if you see this and remember me, someday Damon, when I am older, I wish to be able to meet you. Someday I would go over to America to see you. For a very long time I have been self taught everyday for a few hours each session, but I still have many doubts in my mind of how I’d hold up against a trained fighter. Perhaps I need to believe in myself. Sadly due to many things too I have never dueled against a trained expert. But only really people who have a solid idea of how hema and swords work. But in short. I really wish to meet you Damon. Someday I might hopefully meet you

The Spanish rapier is arguably the best sword to use in a one-on-one duel, but the nimcha is superior on the battlefield and can be used decently from horseback.

Without an additional off hand I agree rapier is the best 1v1 weapon save for maybe spear.

Historically the rapier was used on the battlefield, extensively by the Spanish. Was quite effective at that with the rapid toppling of two major empires in Central/South America. Yes, the rapier was popular for duels for a time. However, in a civilian role it was quickly replaced with the Smallsword. Due to it being more economical to make, easier to keep on you & brutally effective. Btw, both Spanish and Italian rapier systems do also allow for cuts too. The blade will absolutely cut. However, it is not designed to be shearing through tough targets (bone) with ease. For that Europeans used Cutlasses, Sabers, Messers or the Dussacks (depending on region or time period). Btw, a more equal match would be with Messer or Dussack. Due to the more similar use and design.

The rapier had a battlefield version that saw great success by both the portuguese and the spanish; the war rapier.

@@karkkosvolfe it also depends on what type of sword you're talking about as well; while the very long, thin bladed swords might have been popular with the nobility in the late 1500's, the common swords in use in Iberia until quite late (1700's (Rada's time period) and later, as with most of the continent) were still essentially arming swords with a slightly more complex guard (usually finger rings and a connecting ring, occasionally a knuckle bow). The long, thin ones also saw some use on battlefields, but by the time they became incredibly common, the battlefield (and civilian combat, to a lesser extent) had largely changed and the sword was becoming less used. got to remember, La Reconquista was largely over by the end of the 15th century, and they were still fielding soldiers in full plate harness or at least with steel breast plates and helmets, often with gauntlets. It's well documented that while firearms were brought to the Americas to conquer the peoples there, they had far more crossbows and hand-bows. There was not a magical time jump between Late-medieval Hispania and Late-Baroque period Spain. La Destreza was originally developed in the beginning (before Carranza's book was published) with those shorter ( generally 30"-34" blades), arming sword (often type XV, XVI, XVIII, and XIX blade shapes) type swords with slightly more complex hilts in mind. If you ever get an opportunity to play with Destreza with that type of sword, I highly recommend it. You really only run into issues when the other person has a really thin blade, which would be my guess why they developed the shell and cup hilt.

@@wildrangeringreen I am well aware. I was simplifying significantly as the terminology used at the time is highly obtuse & subjective depending on source, location and timeframe.

Well done to both gentlemen. A couple key points for reference. The first is that the rapier was historically used on the battlefield. Far longer than it was a dueling (civilian) tool. In civilian use, it was replaced with the smallsword. Additionally, there are techniques for cuts with the rapier (flick or snap cuts) in both Spanish and Italian systems. These are cuts of opportunity, or to create space. Not intended to sever limbs etc, the rapier blade profile is not as efficient for that. Compared to a messer, saber, cutlass or dussack. As mentioned, kudos to both for an excellent match and learning exchange.

In regards to machete fencing my mentor and instructor is Miguel Lourido of Colombia and Mike Dylan in Tiré Machet.... That being said the bedrock of my growth has been my own. @@DaMonStith Briefly, 32 years of stick and shield in the Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA), 25 years of Heki Ryu traditional archery, currently learning DeCampo 123 Filipino stick/sword under master Jomalin and Paolo Pagaling. I'm located in Europe. I would love to find someone who actually could teach African styles. For example spear and shield, or sword and shield. I have found fragments of these styles, but it would be better to have someone who really knows it.
