When setting snares for wolves, careful consideration should be give to location. This is key. Remember, wolves are predatory animals seeking a food source. Wolves primary diet consists of ungulates. They can also eat fish, rodents and even grasshoppers. That being said, wolves will generally find and follow ungulates. They can travel many miles in one day in search of their prey. Several key things to look for. Look for an ample supply of ungulates in an area. Then look for wolf scat and wolf tracks. The wolf scat and tracks do not necessarily have to be fresh. Reason being, wolves many times follow a circuit and return to the same area in 5-7 days. Especially if they have been successful in killing prey in the area where you find their scat and tracks. Remember too that wolves mark their territory with their urine as other canines do. Try to spot/find these areas sometimes by smell. Set up your own "Pee Posts" where you think wolves will likely travel. Place your bait in the same areas. Look for their travel routes and place your snares there. Use caution when placing bait and use a dirt hole so as not to catch birds of prey in your snares. Use diverters so as not to accidently catch ungulates in your snares. Follow all applicable game laws in your area as to where snares can be placed in regards to trails, roads etc. Be safe and good luck.
