I just had my left thyroid lobe removed and there was no cancer. (Happy for that aspect.) This endocrinologist said he would NOT perform a second FNA (1.5 years later) and said removal of my left thyroid lobe was the only suggestion he had to insure ‘no cancer was present. Presently, I’m three-weeks post surgery and am dizzy and sick…weak and now still can’t drive due to the dizziness and imbalanced feeling. The endocrinologist who told me to get it done has nothing to say about my daily ill-feeling. I’m going to try another endocrinologist at a nearby, larger-city clinic. Please pray a decent solution is found to relieve my dizzy/nauseous feeling I am presently experiencing. I can't imagine if I found out later it wasn't necessary (it was necessary for me.) It sure changes your life though. Fatigue, Brain Fog, Muscle Cramps, Depression, dry skin etc. All those medical people who told me this was a "good cancer" I appreciate that it's an easier cancer to treat, and I'm grateful for the medical people who cared for me in 1986, but I'd love to give you an opportunity to live a month in my skin and deal with living without a thyroid and see how enthusiastic you are about it then.

I had multiple nodules, several were calcified. I went in every 6 months for needle biopsies. The nodules continued to grow, the test results were always inconclusive. My maternal Aunt was dying from throat cancer. it wasn't from her thyroid, but if mine developed cancer it would of been in the same area and the same cancer. I had 2 different doctors and 2 different opinions. I opted to remove it! it's coming up on 4 years, still having to adjust my Synthroid. I gained weight around my middle I can't get rid of. my skin is wrinkly on my arms. I'm 68 and I made this choice. For me it was the right choice. I also had a parathyroid removed a year before that had turned into a tumor and was flooding my body with calcium. Good luck to all you and God bless! p.s. I was benign!

Sorry about your experience. I was diagnosed with an enlarged thyroid gland, multiple nodule goiter on the right in the mid 80s and being in the military, my hormone level was constantly monitored and adjusted when needed during my pregnancies. During the late 90s I was given radiation to destroy the gland, but for some reason I did not need hormone replacement because my levels were always "normal". However, I found out a few years ago that I also had nodules on the left side. My doctor's treatment for me was continued monitoring, but then I started to have pain on the right side of my neck. A biopsy was done and came back inconclusive, so another was done and came back normal. I decided to have a total thyroidectomy because some of the nodules were calcified, the pain and bulge in my neck on the right, and my trachea becoming crooked due the nodules pushing against it. Surgery is not for everyone, but you have to be you own health advocate because some medical professionals are not completely transparent. I'm now recovering from surgery 10 days ago, and except for fatigue, neck stiffness and stress that something negative is going to happen with my incision, I'm going okay! By the way, my paternal grandmother had a goiter the size of a grapefruit on her neck and I did not want that happening for me.

I have toxic multi module thyroid and it does everything from heart palpitations, brain fog, arrhythmia, weight gain. Everything. It's basically hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism because you get symptoms from both. My mom had hers removed and and she had energy out the wazo. She was a head cook in hot kitchen and went to the gym every day. If you don't need the surgery don't get it. If it's grown like mine and have multiple nodules that can produce so much hormone at one that you shake and your jaw tries to clamp and you're freezing. Maybe get it removed.

It's been done for a long, long time - something seems wrong, so why not just remove the whole thing? I had a kidney tumor. One doctor suggested (without biopsy results) to just REMOVE THE ENTIRE KIDNEY. Wtaf. "You can live with just one kidney". THAT'S NOT THE POINT. I had a biopsy. The tumor was benign, so they abated it. No problem. When I was a teen, my mom was told there were "questionable cells" on her cervix. They did a complete hysterectomy. She immediately went into menopause. They could have left the ovaries to prevent that, but some surgeons just can't be bothered. You either get a doctor who does a surgical strike or you get one that's knife-happy.

I couldn’t sleep, constant headaches, my thyroid had a nodule the size of a plum and was pushing my trachea over so I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t even get out of bed bc I was so tired. I was having high levels (hyperthyroidism) but had absolutely no symptoms just a 3cm nodule on my right thyroid that was big enough in size for doctors to be concerned as to how I wasn’t having a hard time breathing, swallowing, or eating. Even though I wasn’t showing any symptoms I believe it was best to remove it because I feel had I not I would’ve eventually began to feel those symptoms, I was a little let down that they couldn’t just ligate the nodule from the thyroid and I could keep both but because of the size there really wasn’t a way to do so. I am praying and hopeful that I will not need to be on medication for the rest of my life as long as my levels balance out on their own.

Well… you should do the biopsy first and if it is cancerous or if it is obstructing something then you should accept surgery.
@KimmieJ1920

It’s not that simple. Biopsies sometimes come back non diagnostic or inconclusive. My afirma came back inconclusive and all my imaging staged my nodules at a TIRADS 4 which is 85% chance of cancer. With that coupled with my biopsies over the last 10 years with the last 2 years being inconclusive, the nodule changes, new nodules showing up, growth into other structures, and a family history of thyroid and neck cancers mine had to come out.

I had half mine taken out in 2010 due to a large goiter. No symptoms, meds and normal labs. Now I have visible nodules on the other side and I believe they are obstructing my breathing. I wish I had taken a more holistic approach years ago. I believe that thyroid issues are rooted in stress and emotional health. If you don’t fix what’s causing the root of the issue just taking out body parts isn’t going to help in the long run. Even if I have the other half taken out, I’m not convinced this is going to solve issues and could present other problems elsewhere. That explains why my thyroid levels were always normal even though I had a goiter and nodules. I learned that the thyroid is usually the victim of your immune system overreacting and it’s not really the thyroid that’s the problem. That’s why so many people have complications after surgery. The problems also tend to be more common in women because we tend to have more emotional issues and the thyroid is the emotional gland. I wish I had worked harder to get to the root of my problem earlier. I think it would’ve prevented a lot of this. I wish you the best.

Are there areas that do the surgery without, oh I don't know, doing a biopsy first? Like yeah I had my Thyroid removed, and yeah I am still working on recovering though my medication is not right yet, but I had biopsies done on my Thyroid and on some inflamed lymph nodes first, where the thyroid came back as papillary cancer and the lymph nodes came back ok. While yes I 100% agree trying to recover from it is no fun and the side effects of not being properly medicated sucks royally, I can't imagine any credible doctor doing a total thyroidectomy without either it being due to extreme hyperthyroidism or in the case of cancer getting a biopsy first. Something seems very off with this story, almost like it is an advertisement, because while yes every symptom she explained is fully accurate, I can't imagine a doctor not doing a biopsy first, specially since to get approved from insurance I am sure insurance would require a biopsy for something like that. Now I could be wrong and maybe I just got very professional doctors, but still it doesn't sound right since there is no way a insurance company would approve a thyroidectomy without a biopsy or a diagnosis of extreme hyperthyroidism.

@hockeyhacker97

@@bryanbm2231 But was yours just removing to remove because it "might be" or was it removing to remove because regardless of if it was or not it was still enlarged or overactive enough to where it would be dangerous if it wasn't removed? You don't always have it removed purely due to cancer, sometimes you have it removed because it is dangerous regardless of cancer or not. If yours had a growth on it large enough to interfere with your breathing or causing hyperthyroidism they would have removed it regardless and then biopsied it during the surgery to see what the next steps should be. You don't just remove it because "it might be cancerous" without making sure something else isn't going on, but you would remove it without having to do a scan first if it is something that is a direct danger to your health. I highly doubt you had surgery without either having something dangerously large or you had a scan or test and just didn't realize how simple they are, wither it be a blood test coming back with extremely unsafe high levels of T4 or T3, or an ultrasound. I had gone in for something entirely separate, coughing up blood every hour for 7 weeks straight, and had a CT done to figure out what was going on with that when the thyroid stuff was found on it so that had nothing to do with the thyroid itself, I then had an ultrasound and blood drawn to see if it was suspicious or not which it did, I then had a FNA biopsy to confirm if it was our not which is a biopsy done with ultrasound. It was confirmed and then I had my surgery with a CT before hand just so the doctor knew what he was working with but that scan itself is definitely doctor personal preference. The only scan done for the thyroid directly before thyroid surgery was the ultrasound. Are you trying to say that you had no ultrasound, and no blood test and didn't have something large enough to endanger you, and they where just like "yup lets do surgery without making sure that is the problem first"? I am not saying you are lying, I am just curious is maybe what you think a scan is and what a scan really is are not the same and you did have a scan without realizing that is what it was since it is a simple ultrasound. And like I said if your thyroid is pressing on your airway or is causing you to have such a high hormone level that it is extremely dangerous for your health then you wouldn't need to do any scan, but this video was not talking about something like that.

Moved last paragraph to top just because otherwise it might be TLDR, so this last paragraph comes last just is the conclusion to what the rest describes for those who don't want to read. Point is while the story could be very much true, I have a feeling some key information was "overlooked" in order to fit the advertisers narrative. My bet is the doctor probably went "Your FNA came back inconclusive, you are having bad hyperthyroidism, do you wish to do the FNA again or would you like to just flat out have it removed since you are eligable regardless if it is cancer or not since you have hyperthyroidism". Agreed, that is fairly standard procedure. But I do have a feeling that while the symptoms and what not are fairly accurate that the truth may have been stretched a bit seeing as this is an advertisement for "Afirma", and drug and medical companies have no issue with stretching the truth to try to get patients to ask for something they don't need, I can't imagine a credible doctor doing a total thyroidectomy without a biopsy first, partial thyroidectomy sure, partial thyroidectomy where they do a more thorough biopsy while you are opened up and switch to a total thyroidectomy if it comes back malignet, sure, but a total thyroidectomy without doing a biopsy first? no. I know when I had mine removed, I had several tests for something unrelated because I was coughing up blood like every 2 hours for 6 weeks straight (they never did figure out what was causing that) and found it to be suspicious in the CT scan while they where looking for something else, then I had an ultrasound, then I had my FNA biopsy 3 weeks later then when the biopsy came back as papillary cancer on the thyroid and fine on the lymph nodes, I then had another CT 2 weeks later followed by my surgery a week after that. And prior to the surgery it was like "here is the plan, we are going to do a total thyroidectomy since that has been confirmed to have cancer and you are opting to just have it dealt with now rather then just remove half and hope it was just in the one visible nodule, we will do another more thorough biopsy on the lymph nodes while we have you open because sometimes they can be a false negative, if they come back positive do you wish to agree to remove them?". Everything was tested multiple ways, I was given multiple options of what to do and how to do it, and yes I did opt to get it done and over with so that I don't have to do surgery multiple times, and yes I did opt to do the radioactive iodine because again I qualified as high enough risk and I really didn't want to have to deal with it again. Unfortunately at my 6 month scan some stuff came back as suspicious again, but they decided to not act on the suspicion and wait till my 1 year scan which is coming up here is a month.
