I /look/ fine but im not, so I get nervous. I went out with someone always the first few months. It really helps you build confidence if you have a loved one who you trust and will stand up for you. I also go to therapy to help process my feelings about being disabled, and that also really helps. The best thing my therapist ever told me was that I am valid, and i don't owe anyone an explanation. If I experience ableism, I have the right to stand up for myself. And in my experience, even strangers will stand up for you when you're being mistreated! It's so, so hard. But I believe in you. As a wheelchair user I don’t think people have any idea how much these chairs cost... I didn’t until I needed one. They can be around the same as a new car- sometimes more. @@Sayurilia I wish 😭😂 If you get a standard fit chair like you’d get while in a hospital, that’s around the base price. But those chairs will internally tear up your body and you’ll have pressure sores, pelvic obliquities, etc. They can’t be used long term, the body will start breaking down within months (I know this from personal experience) The same is true for scooters and folding powerchairs, which start at around 2K. They can’t be used all the time. My current manual chair was covered by insurance but the cost for everything was around 10K. My good friend with CP has a manual chair that was 30K. Her Powerchair was 70K. The vast majority of people require customized equipment- I’ve used both folding lightweight powerchairs, standard manual chairs and different types of customized chairs. If you need a chair 24-7 that will work for a range of activities, the base price is around 5K

I think a seasons suspension from the team would be fair, plus some community service in a rehab facility. I know in one case from years ago, the judge required the culprit (also a college student) to use a wheelchair 24/7 for one month. He had to go to his classes and the bathroom using the chair. If he was caught cheating on his punishment, he was looking at expulsion.

I've been disabled due to a rare illness I've had since age 22. People see me and tell me, "you're too young to be disabled" just because my disability is not so visibly obvious. I can stand and walk, but not very well, and not for very long. I struggle just to step in and out of my bathtub and need assistance even to get into my car. And because my disability is caused by a medical condition that is also life threatening, I can easily get sick. I would catch a cold from someone I meet in public and end up in ICU. Because of this, I can't work a job. I mostly stay home and limit my exposure in public places. I've been advised not to go anywhere with large crowds, which includes church services. Visibly, when people see me, they think I look completely normal and don't understand why I'm legally disabled, use a wheelchair and have handicapped parking. They think I'm just being lazy. Because they can't relate. They don't understand how difficult every little thing can be, which they take for granted. Something as simple as just getting into a car. Be thankful, and have some consideration for those who struggle with disability every day.
