Who would have known that worms love a bit of bluegrass music? That is the only logical conclusion from the 2024 Falmouth Worm Charming Championships, which was won convincingly today (Sunday, May 19) by a team of hillbillies who enticed 32 worms to the surface of a 2 metre square plot of grass with the power of country and western music.
Growing in popularity every year, this was the fourth annual worm charming championships, which was dreamt up by artist Georgia Gendall in 2021. Originally held in Penryn, the contest moved to The Dracaena Centre in Falmouth in 2022 (when one, solitary worm was found during a heatwave), and was back there again this year featuring the usual worm-themed food, worm charming merchandise and a brass band.
For the competition itself, teams were each given a two-metre square plot of grass to charm worms out within half an hour, without digging or using any mechanical tools. This year, there were over 200 plots, as hundreds of people took part using all manner of unusual methods to try and raise worms to the surface.
