Do you need to use an ecommerce site to set up a shopping cart on Wordpress? I've been selling on Etsy for a while now and I want to set up a personal website to sell from as well since Etsy is very limited with what you can do, so I've started building the basics of the site. But this sounds like I would have to build my site through the ecommerce site?
@Linesoflila

Brilliant review! I have several domains hosted at Wordpress but when I decided to venture into e-commerce, I shifted one, Lines of Lila, to Shopify. Only some points you didn't mention, and I hope you wouldn't mind my additional input, are the hosting capability of each. I have not tried WooCommerce, but I was able to study it before giving Shopify a try. You are correct that with WooCommerce you need to purchase a hosting plan to start with, but Shopify is almost a complete package (which probably explains the pricing) because it is a hosting platform by itself. Once you upload your products, they're up in seconds. Shopify also offers domain purchasing like Wordpress. But you can redirect your pre-purchased domain to Shopify for free. And as you've mentioned, I agree that Shopify needs more development with their blogging features. Although, if you just need basic blogging features and your main purpose is to sell your products, then I think their blogging platform is OK. SEO-wise, Shopify has basic SEO capability and there are Shopify apps, free or paid, to boost up SEO. Also, Shopify's themes are both ready-made and customizable, too. I think they call it the liquid theme or something. I'm a no-brainer when it comes to coding, I just use basic codes I research online when I need to change something. But the best part is, since venturing into e-commerce needs to be less complicated so you can focus on YOUR PRODUCTS and MARKETING (personally, I need something like this because my "products" are my own artworks so I need more time to focus on creating), I was able to set up a Shopify gallery ala store in less than a month and wouldn't have to worry about upgrades and security, etc. (Shopify is PCI compliant, btw). I've tried both their Basic and Pro plans, shifting between each in seconds since mine is a startup business and need to budget. The best part are the apps that you can install (they have free and paid 3rd party apps and even free apps straight from Shopify). Installing apps enabled my "website" (I am calling it now a website because it's almost a complete package) to function on its own. What I really found easy about Shopify is that everything is in place, e.g. inventory, collections of items, shipping features, payment gateways, POS, mobile integration, etc. These are the basic, app-free features, by the way. So you just need to install apps (that install in seconds) if you want to add more features. In other words, Shopify is primarily designed for e-commerce website building. Just a disclaimer I am not advertising Shopify here. Haha. But I just want to share my experience. Maybe it won't work for some. But for me it worked very well as I was able to focus on creating art. Sorry for the long comment and hope I was able to help. (PS: It actually took me sleepless nights researching the best e-commerce platform prior to this. I have a day job and I need an online store running while I'm away, hence, my choice). Thanks for reading and all the best. :)

Wow Kori, this was a great breakdown of the two. I opted for woocomerce. However i was wondering is there a way for the customer to get the a statement like the way you for a bank statment? The statement gives a breakdown of the complete purchases within the given period of time. There was this plugin WooCustomer which was nice but not supporting the current version. Any advice you can offer? Thank you.

Question, what made you pick Shopify over BigCommerce? Also not sure how to write this... So I need a store up in 30 days I wanted WooCommerce so I could make it fancy, custom and etc... But as an Minimum Viable Product I go with Shopify or Bigcommerce. Is it difficult to take my customer base with me when I switch? Is that a common thing that small family owned businesses want to do when they leave? Try out Shopify, BigCommerce, and WooCommerce out and switch or do most just pick one and live with it? Thanks for another great video keep.m come.n

As a Shopify customer for 1.5 years I do not recommend them. Many customers myself included have severe traffic drops. I have called Shopify numerous times to get help with the issue. My business has dropped in half since moving from a dedicated server using oscommerce to Bigcommerce and then Shopify. I thought my store would be more secure and more modern using a service like Bigcommerce or Shopify. Bigcommerce was even worse than Shopify for traffic drops. I am now going back to a dedicated server with WooCommerce before we go bankrupt from loss of business. Additionally, our Internationals orders have almost completely stopped. I don't think Bigcommerce and Shopify work well across all web browsers and devices. These issues are not obvious with short-term use.

Kori - Awesome video, nice job on 11 minutes of great information, and fair comparisons. You hit the nail on the head with your final point and it is what I was thinking as I've been exploring WooCommerce and Shopify.... Shopify is quick, it is easy, and it is extremely secure out of the box! Thus, to get a store up and running quickly, Shopify can be the proof of concept. We can take the profits and invest in IT personnel and WooCommerce later, especially if we need to implement more sophisticated extensions. Thanks again for a great assessment video!

Which platform would you suggest for such large no of SKUs. And that I would like a fast loading website for good customer experience, they can ask me questions on products and leave reviews post sales. As a seller, I should be able to do bulk upload of new products, bulk changes/deletion of SKUs frequently. SEO has to be easy and good. Look forward to your reply.

@schaeffergames
8 жыл бұрын
WebTergrity is not being clear or fully accurate. Woocommerce platform does have paid and free plugins, that is true. However, she makes it seems that full integration will cost you hundreds if not thousands. She makes no mention that many plugins that achieve desired effects are made by others that are much cheaper or even free! Code Canyon, a website that sells themes and plugins for Woocommerce has robust sections that cost under $35. Themes from Code Canyon cost under $60. Also, you aren't adding dozens of plugins to make your store what you want. From a practical side, you just don't need that many plugins. Many plugins do multiple duty to achieve what you want. If you don't plan on checking your store at least once a day, you shouldn't have an online store.To maintain a secure store, you should absolutely update. As for the updating, the plugins let you know from the dashboard what needs updating. You check the boxes of the plugins that say there is an update and you hit update. 1-minute maxumum. It's no chore. You aren't redownloading and reinstalling plugins. I am a long time user of Woocommerce and it just makes sense. Shopify will get expensive very quickly once you 'make your store your own' and pay more for what Woocomerce can provide cheaply.

Great comparison and a good video.. The mouse pointer kind of bothers me though lol As a designer/developer I tend to lean towards WP since it is more flexible and I own the site with all of its files and what not. I do think that shopify would be great but I'm hesitant to start using that option for clients since it is too easy where they don't need me in many ways. I believe that I will use both for different clients (btw magneto and other systems are just getting lazy) and since I develop themes I'll always choose WP for my own stuff (even for some clients who prefer more customization).

+Edco Based on my Experience, Prestashop does have a steep learning curve when you start out with the installation and the configuration of the software in your web host/server, and the configuration of your online store. It starts as a pain to work with, but as you continually use the software, taking some time to practice and get to know the software, it'll progressively get easier and easier. I've been googling all over on this topic. This was an outstanding video... Thank you! The only critique I have would be that as I am technical enough to have found and be watching this video... I would have liked to have heard a little more about hypothetical costs. I've actually been getting the impression the woocommerce seems actually MORE costly... Especially initially and for more advanced features. However the repeated fees of shopify might build up over the long term... (Of course so might the free features and benefits) Ultimately you talked about all the right questions I had and how you phrased I will definitely trust and go with the Shopify option. Ironically, I actually wanted to use SquareSpace, but they refuse to support Bitcoin payments which I actually need for the customer base I will be selling (apparel) to. Anyway... Thanks for this!

***** OK, if you are willing to endulge me further... I can certainly create my own themes, or modify free ones as I am HTML+CSS literate... The plugins intrigues me... as I was thinking I might not need any with Shopify, and would be much more likely to need them with WooCommerce. Despite the costs still leaning towards WooCommerce being cheaper especially for the DIYer... I'm thinking that building the thing is all fine and hunky dorey... Not too bad... but security... The updates and having to worry about security seem like a potentially massive headache... So... then I guess my other question would be on the feel for out of the box functionality... what does it take to get WooCommerce up to speed with out of the box Shopify? or are they about on par? My guess would be that shopify would have a good deal of out of the box stuff that woocommerce does not. You say 2 plugins... but how many might I need to get up to speed? etc etc Thanks for humoring me.

Im very very sorry but this video is very inaccurate. You are comparing Shopify ( and all in one platform) versus Woo Commerce a simple program for Wordpress. Specifically for the "Bad section" stating Shopify is more expensive. This is incorrect. In Wordpress the business package which enables ecommerce capabilities, you must pay a yearly fee of $299. Divide this by 12 months and thats $25 a month Just for Wordpress alone. Then you have to pay a different Host webmaster $3-$5 a month extra to host your website. Shopify offers it all for the basic $29.00 a month. but with Wordpress it gets worst. A basic startup business owner in most cases must hire someone who knows coding or what to do in Wordpress as a added cost to the business budget. Lets face the truth they cost around $2000+ and thats just to build it.....notice that you need to maintain the wordpress updated all while Shopify has it updated for you on the backend. Customizations I get it but to a certain extent. Its not groundbreaking either. meaning its not such a significant factor that will increase your profit to the next level. Shopify is a very big threat to web developers, like HUGE threat because its making it super easy for you the business owner to do it yourself without hiring someone. People if Subways makes the sandwhich for you why would you want to buy the bread in one store, to buy the ham in another store, to buy the mayo in a third store and then you gotta make it yourself. No. Go to the supermarket buy everything in one place and then my little brother makes me the sandwhich. done.

+Edwin Anthony What Wordpress business package which enables ecommerce capabilities cost a yearly fee of $299? Are you talking about the merchant fees? dedicated IP? SSH? please elaborate.

The Ecommerce Package. Its on their homepage. Spoke to a representative and they stated the same.

+Edwin Anthony I have no idea what you are talking about either. You install wordpress for free if you have your own webhost account - buy a theme that has woocommerce bundled in - and that's it. The only yearly fees are separate which are plugin licenses, your webhosting, and your merchant account.

+TimothyJung yes. But why would anyone want to know how to build a Flex Capacitor when ready to sell tools already exist? I prefer to purchase something already made to work then to hire someone and depend on someone to build it for me. Cheaper faster and effective.

I think really the best option would probably to make either a clickbank on amazon store on a regular wordpress website.

We had a Shopify website for about 3 months. Useless. The apps don't work, and you end up speaking to the developers direct. It's database/spreadsheet management (uploading new items in bulk) is problematic too. Also didn't flag fraudulent transactions, and we ended up losing money. We have had an EKM website for 6 months and even though it works well, there are some big issues with is ebay Application, which works well, until you notice that all of the data has been transferred, apart from the most important item -- the SKU's, thus manually inputting them into ebay, defeating the whole reason for having the app in the first place. We are just about to embark on a Woocommerce/Wordpress website - and fingers crossed it works. Will keep you all posted.

I see her affiliate links for shopify and the yoast plugin. Not sure I trust this "review" isn't biased.
