It important to remember these 'rules' in conjunction with the manufactures instructions. What I mean is, the manufacturer is operating in an 'ideal' situation and doesn't know about your installation, your chimney height etc. We tried to follow the manufacturers instructions to the letter and built orange, smoky fires which sooted up the door. After talking to the manufacturers and learning more about fires, it was clear we should ignore the manufacturers recommendations regarding the position of the air lever on our fire. Now we 'follow the colour' to determine where the lever should be and have beautiful, bright fires which don't soot up the door 🙂

using a wood stove is a never ending learning process what people fail tou understand is the air intake and damper arent for emissions theyre for slowimg the fire down so that tje stove doesnt over heat crack remember back in the old days wood stoves burned down a lot of houses and more than a few people were killed in those fires the majority of the fires were caused by running the stove wide open untill it get red hot and cracked those cracks sometimes were just cracks and sometimes when they large parts of the stove cracked off amd amd the burning wood or coal out on the floor causimg a nearly instant house fire stove dont start so many these days thankfully and thats because houses got better and the stoves dont have to be run as hot anymore to barely get a comfortable

If everyone only burnt quality seasoned wood or pini Kay briquettes properly, top down lighting method, and kept the stove burning got enough, participate emissions could be radically reduced. My wood stove run properly is not the same as someone on the next street burning bits of soggy pallets rescued from a skip. Education is needed alongside the more stringent regulations.
