Great lesson! If you break something, find some sucker to fix it for you! :) (But yes, it's a good lesson. One that has lead me to rebuilding gear just because it was worn before I got it and broke while I was using it.)

A wise person would not allow his grandson to so comprehensively abuse his chisel. Handle massacred and the cutting edge wrecked. With Keith's unilateral decision to use wormed wood the grandfather has lost that tool.

Just loved this one, Keith. The first rule of borrowing tools is to return them in like condition and cleaner than you received them. I hope he owned up to how the chisel was fixed and showed his grandfather your video! I have a set of crappy big box plastic handled chisels that I loan out when someone asks - and a very nice set of wooden handled chisels that have never seen a metal hammer that I use myself. :-)

Hello Keith. Nice job! I’ve restored a few socket chisels myself. They were handleless pieces of rusted junk in the bottom of tool box that we cleaned out after my grandfather died. Those chisels, as have other assorted tools inheritances, have become prize possessions and conjure up fond memories of grandpa whenever I use them. One other thing, I’m sorry to say that you are no Ashely Harwood.

That was fun to watch Keith - thanks for sharing! I find myself often stopping to spend a day making handles for hammers, scrapers, chisels and the like as well as sharpening them too, as I love using them in my work. Been doing alot of gunstocks lately so having the right shape onhand sure makes the work go faster.

Keith you are truly a multi-faceted craftsman. I was expecting you to pull out your scribe instead of a pencil to mark the center of the stock. I didn't know about the leather on the socket chisels. I looked at a couple that I have and it looks like they originally had a dowel on their end also. I think I'll give it a try. Thanks for sharing.

That's the correct way, makes a stronger tip. Same with plane irons. Turning gouges are kept as one bevel because that should be lying on the wood, not square on as shown here.

For sure. Just don't do the taper like he did. You're better off doing it right on the end so you can test the fit. It don't always work out first go around. With the taper on the end you can tune it up some more. I also mark the handle and my headstock so I can put the handle right back in it how it came out. Not sure how important that is but it works for me.

My Maternal Grandfather "Pa-Alec" (Alex) did wood turning. Made Cedar bedposts from trees cut on his farm in South Georgia. I can still remember how the shop smelled. I don't know how old I was but I had to put both hands on the tablesaw and stand on tiptoes to "barely" see over it! I have a trio of Stanley wood chisels I picked because the blade shank goes all the way through to a metal cap. I still don't hammer on them (much)...
