Yo man! thank you for this tip, I have a similar wood burning stove. Great help! Instead of using news paper, and cardboard-I used one "enviro-log" and two pieces of dry wood. Good technique. I have a stove like this, and find that on cold winter days there’s often a cold downdraft that prevents the first smoke from rising. To overcome this, before lighting the kindling, make a torch from a twisted sheet of newspaper, light one end, and pass that flame back and forth across the inside front of the stove, where the smoke has to go first. Doing this will start a rising flow of hot air, and when you light the kindling, the first smoke will follow that upward flow.

Thanks for the wood staging advice. I'll have to try it. I also have a couple of suggestions. Instead of leaving the door cracked. You can try the ash pan door underneath. But you have to keep an eye on it, or it will overheat and damage your stove. Second, instead of a bic lighter. Try using a propane torch with the push button igniter. It makes lighting much easier, and it will last for years. Thanks again for the tip. I look forward to trying it.

I’m not convinced, but gonna try it. Never been a Boy Scout, so building a fire is all new to me. It’s certainly a process of learning how to do it, and boy am I frustrated !I’m tired of my fallback solution of relying on the Duraflame log to get the fire first going- use it as my kindling. I do know the importance of spacing the logs to allow airflow, but have trouble first getting the fire going and developing the hot bed on the bottom. Thanks for your suggestions in the video.

Regarding window cleaning, I've found that by burning seasoned eucalyptus, little soot is deposited and it easily wipes off with a moist paper towel. Before, using unseasoned fuel, the soot used to become encrusted, requiring a metal scraper and a powerful oven cleaner.
