This is a good demonstration of this old tour which has been round for donkeys years now and I see this video of 11 years old I've collected my tap and dies over the last eight years as they are not that cheap around €80 or dollars at the moment in 2024 per unit., however for success you need to oil the wood and I mean not oil it with a rag. You need to soak it in oil for at least a week in quality of mineral oil and when the bubbles stop coming out of the wood you know the wood is full of oil and you will be able to cu a perfect thread, same goes for the nut. I've got the complete set of these and I regularly cut threads all the time. Most of my threads are actually made from hard beach and I actually turn down rolling pins because they are the cheapest way of buying that wood already around one and a half inches to 1 and 3/4 inches sometime 2 inches I find I just need to turn it down a little, I normally make the nuts from other bits of beach that I have lying around if I'm making an oak one then that can take longer to soak up the oil on beach but you must soak it, but one thing you have to use is hardwood using any form of softwood It just will not work when you do it. Do not forget to oil it for at least a week or until the bubbles have stopped coming out of the wood that way you will have the absolute beautiful perfect thread every single time unlike the core threads that you see in the video where the wood is dry., every now and then you can re-sharpen the cutter as well and you can get replacement cutters quite easily. Just be careful with the dies and treat them like a chisel. Don't bang them down on metal or anything and all them before you even think of putting them in the wood, even though the wood, only use mineral or Danish oil.

Thanks for your video bud. Seems the take home message is that dry, splintery wood is out of the running! Also looks like you need a ton of elbow grease. I wonder could you lube up the tap with some wood butter or wood wax to help things along, as well as soaking the wood in tung oil.

Nice job. A few tips that might help. On the male threads, use your tailstock to line up the tool. You can also use the tailstock pressure to get everything started. Lock the headstock, apply pressure with the tailstock while turning the tool. As for the female threads you can once again use the tailstock to align and start the threads. I'm assuming there is a 60 degree hole in the back of the tool. Many taps have this 60 degree hole. If yours doesn't then get a center drill and drill one. Good luck.

It's a lot easier to drill or tap if you have a chuck for your tail-stock. Just chuck up the tap & run it dead slow, backing out 1 1/2

I learned to hand thread metal and was taught to go forward a third and back a quarter to clear the waste.

It's different. You don't have to worry too much about that. The problem with this video is that the presenter didn't oil the wood for long enough you should be soaked in Danish oil or mineral or for at least a week until the bubble stop rising out of the wood it does help at times if the wood is very hard to back off a quarter of a turn as you quite rightly said if the wood is particularly hard or you come across or knot. But if possible, avoid using wood that is full of knots

If you have a blind hole you start the threads with the through hole tap then switch to the bottoming tap when you've gone as far as it will go. Don't start your threads with the bottoming tap.

waxing those threads might work better than oil.

Give the wood some oil before you cut the thread. And honestly - 20 minutes video to show 2 minutes of work?! Come on. We understand the pictures - you need not talk for 18 minutes.

@7:20 I explained about the need for the wood to be wet (oiled). I know it's a long video (hey, I even sped up sections for the impatient) but I wanted it to reflect the time and effort that goes into making a threaded section on the lathe. I'll try make them shorter in future.

Bernhard Hofmann I didn't see you use a drop of oil whilst tapping the hole, and we could hear the tap squeaking in the hole. ?????

+lebomm johnson You're right. In the heat of the moment, making the video and trying to say something worthwhile, I completely forgot! As soon as I find the cat-o-nine I'll give myself a good flogging.
