Great tutorial Kenneth. Because I struggled with getting these spring clips to work, I wanted to mention that you need to get two sizes of binder clips to make these. I tried making them using the same size and nearly went mad. The trick is to get the size that you think will work for you for the actual spring clip, then get another set that is one step up in size for the wire portion that sticks above the clip. This allows you to actually fit the wire loop inside the smaller clip without doing a lot of cussing. Hope this helps someone out. (These work great by the way).

Great job of teaching, I have been trying to make sense out of planking for weeks now. I swear some tutorials try their hardest to make it more complicated than it needs to be. You made it seem simple. Thank you!

Thanks Kenneth for taking time to shoot and share this video. Very practical techniques you have shown. I never thought about letting the soaked planks dry into place on the hull, but the way they hold their shape proves to me it's the way to go. I can see how that would prevent warping in the hull construction and I'll use this on the Kearsarge I'll be undertaking soon. Subscribed.

Hey man I was gonna ask, I am 15 years old and have never built a model ship like this, I have build one with solid hulls from scratch but I have always wanted to try this, would you recommend this one? Or even the syren ship that they also have available... I was gonna ask for this for Christmas but this is scaring me lol.

I agree this is the easiest approach and setting on the hull gives all the necessary twists and lateral bends. But why bother with the fan diagram. You only have to work out the taper for one and use it as a template, all the rest are the same. The Portsmouth School of Boatbuilding No 4 shed gave me a good working day's practical demonstrating this on a clinker hull.

They are ordinary paper clips; also sometimes called binder clips. You should be able to find them in any stationary store.

Hello Ken: I have 2 books on the subject and on these two videos you you explain clearly what all those pages left me bewildered and frustrated over! I'm going to un-pack my aborted ship and have another go at planking her. But please, lose the music! It's distracting and makes you hard to hear!

Sorry, but to me this is just another in a long list confusing and unhelpful videos on this topic - the very thing you complain about. I have almost no idea what you’re doing here, and your explanations assume prior knowledge of terms and processes I don’t have.

Thank you for the constructive comment . I would suggest getting " The Neophyte Shipmodeller's JACKSTAY by George f Campbell" Im not sure it if its still in print but you can find copies . This recourse will help familiarize you with some of the terms and then when you watch this video you will have a little more understanding on whats going on . Please keep in mind , many factors go into model ship building . The biggest one I found difficult to over come was scale ( that's the size of the model) The smaller the scale the less the detail. this translates to having to come up with new techniques to get the same/ similar result. I hope this helps and Good luck on your build!

Ken, I like how you setup your planking arrangement I have a question, how did you make paper with lines to get your planking count You have a point at one end then expands out how did you make that I’d really appreciate it I’m starting to build HMS victory 1:98 scale As soon as I return from China. Thanks Dick T

Howdy Dick, Wow are you still over there and I pray your covid free. as for your question , I took index cards for each of the bulkheads and measured the greatest distance between the keel and the whale board . then I matched that to the planking fan and marked the distances off on the strip of paper cut from the index card. then I transposed those marks from the planking fan to the strips and then on the bulkheads. By doing it this way , it allowed for a reference marker on all the bulkheads. Hope this helps .

Thanks for the vid, I have watched over and over again to try and get it and you explain it fantastically, it’s just a hard subject to understand sometimes, but does this apply to the Garlage strake? Also does the whale Line need to be cut? Becouse I try to place the whale line but it intersects with the gun ports, so idk if I should cut it in half or not. I am almost completely lost in this planking (I got the rattlesnake) but thanks for the vid man!
@kennethbascom2577
5 жыл бұрын
Ok as I believe I said in the video , there are many different ways to set measurements for your planking . If I were to do it again I would place my wale line first . and then plank from there . the reason is that, By placing the wale line first you can make sure it looks good and flows below the gun ports. I found the garbord strake to be the most necessary to get right in order to make it look good the whole way through.

ARE THOSE CLIPS THE REGULAR kind that can be bought at Staples? Or are they a special item? If the latter, where can I get them?
@kennethbascom2577

Aren't those clips great!? I would love to take credit for thinking those up , but a ship mate from modelshipworld.com/ is the one I copied from. I went to the dollar store and purchased a 30 pack for a buck. I then took one of the arms off of one clip and placed them into another sideways and they fit perfectly. So out of three clips you get you get two usable ones.
