This is probably the best beginner video I've come across! It gave a different perspective than other videos where the experienced wood turner says, "Here's how you do it" and they do it flawlessly. Here I was able to see it from the perspective of a person with my level of experience as she makes her mistakes and how you correct those mistakes. I hope she kept up with woodturning. Once I get my sharpening station set up, I'll be turning my first bowl - hopefully in a week or two.

What a great video. “The Guiding hand”…. The young woman was getting ribbons on her first go! That was amazing. This video reminded me of my dad teaching me how to do stuff. Memories of a lifetime. Well done indeed. Congrats on her husband coming home. BTW…. We would much rather watch her than the old guy. 😊

I love seeing people at the beginning of learning a skill. I too, am new to turning. Showing your mistakes, and how to fix them, and also showing that a mistake doesn't ruin a piece is also a great example. I have learned a lot of technique from watching Allen, and Stuart Batty videos. This may also help your Daughter-In-Law learn more about the fundamentals of the bevel and how to use the tools more efficiently. I know it has helped me. I look forward to seeing your skills progress.

I suggest including instruction about the bevel, the angles, opening and closing the face and basic safety, like not moving the tool rest while the piece Is turning. I also suggest that we teach young turners to always mask against the dust.

Please do not tell her to push. When that happens they will think that pushing... the harder the better. Let the tool do the cutting. Also try to adjust the tool rest much closer to the work. in the rounding of the outside the tool is about three inches over the rest. Keep it closer. I do enjoy seeing a new turner getting excited about our art. Good for both of you!

@BrailsfordWoodworks
Жыл бұрын
Turning wood green is the best way. You can "Once turn" meaning you turn it to its final dimension. if you are not worried about the bowl's shape distorting, or you can "twice turn" which is you turn it green to about an inch thick, let it dry and then com back and finish the bowl to its final dimension. You can dry your blank and once turn without the bowl distorting, but you have greater chance of the wood cracking. It also has to sit for many years. When air drying you get about an inch per year.
