I got some nice pieces of white oak. I wanted to seal the end grain to let them dry. To give it a try, I already turned one of these pieces into a end grain vase or vessel and hollowed it out to speed up the drying proces. I was also curious if the warping and cracking of the wood would be less if the pith is hollowd out.
I started this project at the end of December and finished it in recent days. In between I let it dry with the opening facing down. It seems that my trial is going well and that this vase is going to stay intact.
As a sealer I used water-based polyurethane. I saw this idea with Gary (Thepapa1947). He showed that the wood then becomes less yellowish, compared to sanding sealers, oil and waxes.
I applied three coats and sanded in between. Finally, I finished the vase on a high gloss with Chestnut "Cut 'n polish" and "Microcrystalline Wax".
This vase is 10 inches (25cm) high and hollowed out almost 9 inches (22,5 cm). I couldn't go deeper because I don't have tools for that. The somewhat thicker bottom makes the vase nice and heavy and stable.
I would love to hear what you think of this vase and if you have any ideas on how to do the hollowing out better. Suggestions and feedback are more than welcome.
