I like seeing new ideas instead of the same thing over and over. Nicely done.🙌

That is so cool. I hope you don't mind if I try this myself. Keep up the great work!

Sure! Go ahead and make a few. That’s why I put the video up. If you’d be so kind to link back as to link back to this video as the source of the idea I’d really appreciate it. More traffic and links help the channel as a whole. Just curious, but if you’re The Lawn Mower Detective, are you also a Mustie1 fan? I amazed at some of the machines he manages to resurrect. Thanks for watching and commenting! Have fun making inverted bottle stoppers.

Very nice. What did you use to seat the “nut” into the top without messing up the threads or glueing the rod to the nut?
@CroakyOak

The nut is actually a stainless steel threaded insert from Niles Bottle Stoppers. The rod I use is a long bolt with the head cut off and then gripped in a Jacobs type chuck mounted in the tail stock. The adhesive I’ve been using is 5-minute epoxy. I won’t be using any more fast setting epoxy for this type of task. If you watch the third segment in my video “Fantastic Scraps and What to Do With Them #2” you’ll see why. The key to how I mount the threaded insert is to remove the threaded mounting rod *after* the epoxy has set up enough to hold the threaded insert in place but *before* the epoxy has cured enough to lock the mounting rod in place. Hypothetically, you could push the threaded insert in place without the mounting rod. However, I find it easier and more accurate mount the threaded insert the way you see in the video. Thanks for you question, -Birch

@@CroakyOak You can also spray the threads with Stoner Release agent. I do it all the time and have not had a problem

Just getting into distilling and was thinking about making some wood stoppers from wood and bone for some old bottles I found ,was checking out your video it's a different idea to the other videos out there it's very cool . Unfortunately for me I have no power tools or lathe and don't want to spend money on ordering silicone stoppers or extra parts it might just be all natural wood and bees wax way for me

You can probably make bottle stoppers without a lathe as long as you don’t mind the stoppers not being round. If the silicone stoppers you’re talking about are those whitish ones that slip over a dowel, buy a minimal quantity at first. You want to able to test the parts you can buy before purchasing too many. The silicone stoppers ends I’ve used always slid off the dowel no matter what adhesive I used. They’re also kind of small, which is OK for some wine bottles. Liquor bottles tend to be larger and the silicone stoppers I have are too small to seal bottles with a larger neck. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Can you recall what size blank you started with? Beautiful job!

Thanks. I believe the blank was *about* 2 1/2” thick. Thanks for watching and commenting.

What size forstner bit do you recommend?

As I recall, in this video I used a 1 1/4” bit to drill the clearance hole for the bottle neck. This size hole works for most bottles, however that size may not work for all bottles. There can be a fair amount of size variation from one brand to the next, especially with liquor bottles. nilesbottlestoppers.com sells several different sizes of bottlestopper tips to accommodate nearly all of the bottles on the market. And I suspect the outside diameter of the bottles may vary more than the inside diameter. Thanks for watching and commenting!
