Glad you didn't hit the back yard over at the house. Got my Cedar hanging baskets my dad made 30 years ago. They are Hexagons and perfect for my hanging baskets. They look good too. I remember working with him to setup the jigs because he made about 50 of those baskets for the family. You don't like the bunnies? I sent them over to you special. They don't bother me any more...LOL...

Seeing the jig gradually wonder away from you at 3:19 made me chuckle because you had shown the hold-down clamp not 20 seconds before, but I do like the simplistic design to these planters. And that Kreg jig does look the business - think it might be time to upgrade my Kreg K2000. Nice work Drew!

Those planters turned out so beautiful and would be a fun/easy build!!! Looks like I'll have to put that Kreg 720 Pro on my wish list. I've got a couple of their earlier pocket hole jigs but this one looks super nice. I didn't know they make a plug cutter for pocket holes now! Always love your outtakes. It makes me feel like I'm not alone with mishaps that occur in the shop! Did you put your SawStop on bypass to rip that pressure treated lumber? How disheartening to get all that rust on your saw but looks like you got it off just fine. Hope you show a picture of the planters after being painted in a later video!

OK, so... s-foils in attack position had me laughing so I missed the next 30 seconds... box designs were great and I'll be getting even more of your plans... outtakes make me feel better since I'm not alone... and your asthma attack after knocking the dust off the light fixture was just [chef's kiss] like watching myself work. Pocket holes are fine, but slow and visible. I've designed, built, and sold a lot of planter boxes. Galvanized staples, waterproof PVA glue, and cedar produces the cleanest looking and most durable boxes for the same cost (or less).

Not sure why you think they're slow or visible. I assembled these planters in no time and all the holes are hidden (except for the last one which got filled). I think I'd prefer using pocket holes over staples, but that's just me. But I do agree that cedar would have looked WAY nicer.

@@FishersShopPocket hole joinery is a good balance of speed and aesthetics. Very accessible to new woodworkers, too. It just doesn’t scale well for this type of project. I can bust out a 36” x16” box in 20 minutes from pre-cut pieces with staples and glue, whereas it would take me probably twice that with pocket holes. It’s all good - I really like how you made this project something that anyone can do (you’re very good at that).

Yup, that works too. The lumber I chose is thicker than those pickets so the planters might last longer, but only time will tell.

i have that pocket jig, the only down side is that it doesn’t clamp anything thicker than 18-19mm (sorry ¾”)

Nice looking planters. Be careful though, the Blue Kreg screws are not rated for wood treated with ACQ (Alkaline copper quaternary) and all the local treated wood uses that. It will destroy the screws in a few years. Use stainless steel if you can find ones that have the washer head.

I wouldn’t recommend pressure treated lumber if you’re going to plant vegetables. PT lumber has arsenic in it that can leach into the veggies.

I think it’s worth noting you probably shouldn’t use pressure treated wood for anything you want to plant to eat. Pay the extra to build it out of cedar for safety 🙂

Fisher quick question for you. I have the same miter saw, when i cut thick stock the blade will deflect unless i cut very aggressively. Any clue why this happens?

I use an ancient Canon EOS60D with a 25 and a 50mm lens. I use Sony Vegas, which I do NOT recommend, to edit.

Just a warning about PT lumber on your cast iron table saw - it will corrode the surface VERY quickly. Even chips and dust. Be careful not to leave any lying on the cast iron part for very long. Ask me how I know :(

Okay, I know this was sponsored by Kreg, but I don’t think you needed to screw down every slat with pocket screws. That’s like $100 in pocket screws! Also surprised Kreg wouldn’t pay for the cedar. Pressure treated is not something I’d run my nice saw blades through. I love your channel, but this one felt like a reach. Also, no unnecessary walnut and not one flathead screw!

lol, it's not $100 in screws. The tri-level planter was $16 for all 212 screws that I used. And yeah... maybe you could get away with fewer, but I had them so I used them. I didn't ask Kreg to pay for any of the materials, I chose and bought all of that myself, including the screws. I could have spent more and gotten cedar but one of my objectives was to demonstrate how affordable building these planters can be.

Love the planters, but you shouldn't use treated if you're going to plant food plants in them. The chemicals can leach out and get in your taters. Nobody wants that.
